T120 Posted August 22, 2012 Report Posted August 22, 2012 Was down south of the border this morning, picked up some plain old GL1 90W gear oil,(no EP ingredients), at a NAPA outlet. Not available in Canada... Just guessing, but probably because doesn't meet with our labelling regulations. Quote
55 Fargo Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 (edited) Yah it most likely is available , most likely some other manufacturers brand and label no doubt Edited August 23, 2012 by Rockwood Quote
T120 Posted August 23, 2012 Author Report Posted August 23, 2012 (edited) Hi Fred, I guess I got a little annoyed - being greeted with a blank stare when I asked locally for something other than GL5 80/90W, although some do spec as yellow metal safe.I realize lubricant discussions sometimes end up in controversy, but I have a couple of 40's vehicle owner's manuals that do caution against using gear oils with EP additives in the transmission - not the differential,(different requirements with hypoid lubricants)...I'm not a chemist so I figure go with the owner's manual. -edit: oversight -I should have mentioned the owner's manuals were both Studebaker and Nash. DJ194950 Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 I installed a R-10 OD in my 50 PLy. 4 dr. The Borg-Warner Manuel stated Use GL-1 (preferred) as lubricant. Why fight when it's avail.?? I'm sure other lubes will work, but why try to change when it's avail.?? Just my 2cents.LOL! Best, Doug Quote
