Roadkingcoupe Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 Phyliss Diller's first TV appearance (at the age of 40) was on Grouco Marx's show "You bet your life". In the you tube clip you can see the Desoto Plymouth "Forward Look" logo on the backdrop behind Groucho. Looks like the show was sponsored by Chrysler to promote the Forward Look cars. Quote
T120 Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) ..Always got a laugh with Groucho and yes, he had a good sponsor Edited August 21, 2012 by Ralph D25cpe Quote
desoto1939 Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 On the You Bet Your Life Show Groucho was a spokes person for the Desoto and Plymouth cars. When I show my 1939 Desoto at shows I have a vantrilloquist Doll of Groucho and I put it on the fron fender. Some people just stare at the him and the oloder crowd always comments about Groucho. I then ask them why he is on the car and then I explain that he promoted the Desoto cars on his TV show. It is always fun to get the reactions of the older crowd because it brings back the memories of when TV was just in the beginning and when we had good wholesum TV programs that the general public could watch and enjoy without all of the violance and crime that we now see on TV and our video games. JerseyHarold Posted August 22, 2012 Report Posted August 22, 2012 In one episode of You Bet Your Life Groucho said 'Your DeSoto dealer stands behind every car he sells....to help you push'. Hilarious. Are there any videos of this show available that include the commercials? I'd be real interested in seeing TV ads for the 1951 and 1952 Plymouths. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 22, 2012 Report Posted August 22, 2012 (edited) Not an old commercial, but a video with a 51 Plymouth with a definitely different side trim treatment. You just have to watch to see what it is. Here's an article on the 51 Plymouth at allpar...........http://www.allpar.com/history/plymouth/1946-1959/plymouth-1951.html Here's an old magazine ad for the 51........http://www.tias.com/8271/PictPage/3923652457.html Edited August 22, 2012 by BobT-47P15 Quote
JerseyHarold Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 Thanks for the links, Bob. That was a lot of good reading. I 've wondered how long it took for graphic artists to do the renderings used in the ads. Quote
T120 Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 (edited) Hey, BobT-47P15,For some reason that Plymouth has some appeal...for me Edited August 23, 2012 by Ralph D25cpe Quote
Robert Smith Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 In one episode of You Bet Your Life Groucho said 'Your DeSoto dealer stands behind every car he sells....to help you push'. Hilarious. Ha! Should have been sponsored by Chevy. LoL Groucho was quite something, and really one of the only other Marx Bros who still had an audience in his later career. Great one liners. :-) Head to your DeSoto Plymouth dealer today. And tell'em Groucho sent ya! :-) Quote
