Don Coatney Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 it is against Colorado State law to build a log cabin from timber grown in the state so folks who want one need to bring in logs from Whyoming or Utah, which they do.-Randy That is interesting. Is it against the law to build a wood frame house with Colorado timber? Is there no logging industry in the state? Quote
randroid Posted May 27, 2012 Report Posted May 27, 2012 Don, Lots of logging but slicing the logs into dimension timber is a lot more efficient use of the tree, and we all know how concerned governments are about efficiency. -Randy Quote
Tom Skinner Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 Ralph, When its done can you put polymil (vapor barrier) on the ground and pour say 4" of concrete slab in there to keep everything high and dry so to speak? Tom Quote

T120 Posted May 28, 2012 Author Report Posted May 28, 2012 (edited) ..and maybe a few inches of styrofoam under the poly for insulation if you're going to heat it?-Randy Hi Tom and Randy,Thanks for your suggestions. Both good ideas .My initial thoughts were also that a vapour barrier underneath the concrete floor would a good idea. With this building ,I'm not sure and I'm leaning against it.The lot is level, although in the final landscaping the drainage will be away from the perimeter of the building..A vapour barrier while preventing moisture from coming up through the concrete, may also trap moisture and cause heaving of the concrete during freeze/thaw cycles - as the building will not be fully heated in the winter, (my thoughts)..We are in a semi-arid climate here as well.Anyhow, that was my reasoning for deciding against using a vapour barrier in this case..My plan is to have 5 to 6 inches of gravel, rebar (10 inch grid) and 5 inches of concrete on top...However,this plan is not in stone and may change. Roof is on, door should be installed this week. This building is not deluxe. Some may ask why the height? The answer is twofold. If in the future I decide to further develop the building - mezzanine, storage,or whatever,I'll have the height.Heck, I may have to take up residence there some day. T120 Posted May 30, 2012 Author Report Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) Can't give you a price on the floor until it's done and I add up all the receipts.I have the gravel on site and I have a quote on supplying the ready mix, but that's only half the cost. Edited May 30, 2012 by Ralph D25cpe Quote
T120 Posted December 17, 2012 Author Report Posted December 17, 2012 Cost for concrete ...placed and finished 2400 sq ft shop plus apron on entrance to shop, also cost of landscaping gravel (slope) around exterior perimeter of shop 40' X 60'. - I supplied gravel as necessary... My price $15,800 - price included concrete,re-bar,placing and finishing, saw cuts, landscaping, etc.Looks good so far. They scheduled the concrete pour while I was away...Good for them, they had the key to the property - (let's get-er-done while he's away)..I was down in Montana.I have been known to be somewhat "fussy",particularly when I'm footing the bill, (Scots,Irish heritage).Anyhow,I believe I chose a good contractor.I was surprised how quickly the job was done, (while I was away)...So far ,everything looks good. The space is filling up fast...I could maybe accomodate a small camper van though if that is what you had in mind Quote
