Lou Earle Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 On my 48 convert have a smoking problem Here are facts 1-Car runs and starts just fine - odd numbered engine- think it is a 230 number is 111(? weird)78 d 46 5112 2- Has a lot of valve clatter eases off a bit when warm 3 compression 1-100 2-100 3-100 4- 90 5-0- thats is right 3 times tested- 6-100. 4-When idling very smooth and no blue smoke but rev her u and and out come the blue smoke then let her back to idle and some blue smoke then none rev again and smoke again 5 all spark plugs are clean and in good shape not wet sooty or oily. Have a got valve guide problems? Hole in piston? what? all ideas welcome. Lou Quote
Robin (UK) Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 My guess would be a holed piston or a stuck valve. I think it's time to get that head off and take a look. Good luck. R. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Lou; I agree with Robin. Pull the head and find the reason for low compression on #5. I think you will also find the reason for smoke. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Start with the easiest..pull the inspection plate and check for stuck valve..you may not need to pull the head to free up... Quote
Lou Earle Posted April 23, 2007 Author Report Posted April 23, 2007 What is best way to free up stiuck valve? I friend of mine suggested running some marvel mystery oil thru the carb and in the gas ?? Sound ok as a starter? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Louman..just couple weeks ago one of our readers went through this..bending a tube and getting pentrant on the identified stuck valve plus shooting it from below through the access plate. Just keep in mind that when pulling down on the valve spring retaining plate to keep forse equal on both sides. If you can get but a tad of movement..you can now start workin it up and down and eventually the swelled carbon buildup will break free..my memory fails me at this moment who that person was..but he got his freed up. Afterwards I would run a quart of Risone in my oil mix...this is an excellent upper cylinder lubricant and detergent...change filter, top off with Rislone equal to one quart..run engine at temp for about 300 miles, change filter..top off with clean oil...go back to normal schedule.
