Powerhouse Posted February 21, 2012 Report Posted February 21, 2012 oil pump pressure while hot at 20ish...60ish when cold Is that OK. Used to be high all the time after rebuild little over 1 1/2 years ago. Running 10w40. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 Factory spec is 45 PSI @ 30 MPH for an early 50s Dodge. Your pressure sounds fine to me or at least, nothing to worry about. Quote
greg g Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 20 at idle or at speed? Low oil pressure at cruise can sometimes be traced to the cam bearings, did you change those during the rebuild?? Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 I assume he means 20PSI at idle, 60 on the road? Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) I assume he means 20PSI at idle' date=' 60 on the road?[/quote']I would think 20 psi when hot at idle may be okay, and 60 psi cold idling or cruising would sound right. But when we assume this, it makes an a$$ out of U and Me. I think the poster needs to provide a little more detailed info on this. Edited February 22, 2012 by Rockwood Quote
Tom Skinner Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) Try running straight 30 wt Oil, and see if the pressure changes. I usually add ZDDP to my oil also. I use NAPA 30 wt Non-Detergent. Your pressures sound OK to me though. On a 1948 Chrysler I used to use mixed weight oils and they didn't seem as stable as the straight weights, our Flat Heads are tough on oil.. I just don't like using different weight oil (10-40wt etc) in my Flat Head. If it has any miles on it it seems to prefer a heavy straight weight oil. Another thing about those 5-30wt etc Oil weights they seem more acclimated to newer closer tolerance engines than ours. Its a matter of personal prefferences here - no right - no wrongs. Good Luck! Powerhouse Posted February 24, 2012 Author Report Posted February 24, 2012 hello all, Sorry for the vague description. 20 at idle hot. 60 at higher rpms hot...I willl check rpms next time. But it sounds like the readings are ok. Yes, I did change the cam bearings when I rebuilt it. All though I had the guy who machined my block do that...I didn't do it personally as I have no tool to d that with and he was well versed in that. Quote
