Need help with a stalling problem. When I apply the brakes the truck stalls almost imemediately. This happens even after shifting into neutral position. This is a 49 B1C with a four speed. Made a minor clutch pedal adjustment but doesn't seem to have changed anything. Does this indicate the need for a new clutch?

this sounds very similar to a problem I wrassled with on my '48 for years...the engine idled fine, had plenty of power (for a stock flathead), and would idle fine when pushing in the clutch to coast at highway speed, but clutching while braking would cause the engine to stall. I tried to remedy this by setting the throttle to partially open, as this seemed to help while braking by not allowing the engine speed to drop below 1500 rpm. I rebuilt the Carter B&B carb annually and set it to specs, but that didn't improve the stalling issue. After over 10 years of this nonsense, I broke down and snagged a used carb off eBay for $20, cleaned & rebuilt it, and haven't had a problem since.

I still have my original carb and have yet to perform a post-mortem on that cursed thing, but I have two suspicions: there may be a crack in the casting allowing the fuel to go where it shouldn't; or more than likely, one of the passages that has the check balls has some varnish in it that I haven't been able to boil out.

The stalling problem only occurs when coming to a stop. It runs just fine at a stand still

So the engine runs okay with the brake applied if it is stationary?

Per previous posts, I'd look carefully at your electrical system.

Do you mean the wires from the master cylinder switch?

Yes, but the short (if that is the problem) could be anywhere along that line. I'm just saying to eliminate this as a possibility.

I'd check to see if there is any wiring near the pedals or their linkages that may be making contact with one of those pieces when the pedals are depressed. Check the routing of your battery cables too.
