That can happen, did you try and spin the speedo with a drill or by hand to see if the speedo will spin up.

Did you have this speedo out, or still in the car?

If still in car, was it working recently?

Or did you just install a new speedo cable, and never had it working to begin with?

Sounds like it might have to be pulled, there are places you can have it repaired, I know Young Ed, did not have much luck with His being repaired. Or hopefully someone on here can get you a another, if you need to go that route.

I know I have always had poor luck on speedo cable installs, always seem to break/twist off the cables end, because of a very sticky speedo, resulting in getting the thing lubed and cleaned up on the back of the speedo head.

Good Luck.........

New cable was working fine for a few miles. What has me confused is that the odometer is still working. Does anyone have internal pics ?

Disconnect the cable at back of the speedo, and see if it is allright.

Sounds like the speedo, needle assembly itself, could be problematic.

Pull the little lube wick out and oil it with some light oil, while your at it.

Did you lube the new speedo cable, prior to installing, usually it comes with a little disposable lube tube.

I have the exact opposite happening now with my 47s speedo, speedo works well, and is quite accurate, but odometer, stopped working again.

My 55 Fargo truck speedo works well, and so does the odometer, and the truck speedo is so simple to remove, not like the 47 Mopar cars....

Is that the coiled wire that's wrapped around the entire cable?

A break in that might be caused by too sharp of a bend in the

housing/cable somewhere along the line. Any curves have to

be fairly gentle. Might need to be re-routed from dash to

transmission. Or a rough place inside the housing.

Just guessing here.

I have had some speedos that were gummed up at the neck where

the cable goes in......used penetrating oil to get that freed up and

turning easily. Could be a stripped gear inside causing needle to not

function. I've taken the back off a speedo and looked at stuff, but

not brave nough to go past a certain point.

Coiled wire is broken. Does anyone have a picture of how many coils it should actually be ?

Are you talking about the spring that goes under the needle?

Yes. The one under the needle and I think I broke the needle too. Guess I need another speedo. Darn and I want to drive it. Got the wire all unwound and I think I could fix this if I could figure out the needle. Anyone have a picture of the pin on it. Doesn-t look broken but it must be as it won't go into shaft hole.

My needle broke at the pin, cannot get the the broken piece out to be able to install new one, had to get another complete unit, if the spring is broken same problem. It was caused by the cable binding and when it broke free the needle jumped to 110 mph then zero, broke the pin off.

I had my extremely erratic speedometer repaired by Bob's Speedometer service - See his adds in Hemmings. I had good luck and service for about $100. I have no connection with this business, but they treated me well.

Wish I would have tried them. I paid over 3 times that to Scotts Speedometer and still have a speedometer that reads low.
