MBF Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Its been awhile, but I remember switching an oil pump. It unbolts from the passenger side, and should just pull out if I remember correctly. Since you're going to tear it down completely, rotating the crank shouldn't matter-you'll need to retime the distributor after you go back together. Mike Quote
supertweet Posted February 5, 2012 Author Report Posted February 5, 2012 o.k., was worried about timing etc. just started to get bogged down, pistons stuck and the conecting rod bolts are resting on crankshaft jounals, then oil pump half out and a main bearing off, getting scattered, not what i had planned. thx, Dave. NiftyFifty Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 This motor sorta sounds like a wreck but likely salvageable, no point being dainty, just start pulling it all apart and bag and tag your parts, oil pump will come out with just the 2 or 3 bolts, distb will need to be reset anyway once you rebuild so not worth worrying about Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 You should take lots of detail pictures prior to disassembly. This will help a lot when the time comes to re-assemble. Make sure you have assembly marks on all rod and main bearing caps as they must be re-installed in the same location. Assembly marks are normally done at the factory so look for them. If you look closley you can see the numbers on the piston rod and rod cap as well as the main bearing cap. In this picture you can see the alignment marks I made with a center punch and a paint stick for flywheel alignment as the flywheel will only go on in the same position as when removed. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 The middle main caps are typically not marked and should be. Center punch with 2 and 3 dots is what I do. Put them off to the side and on the block so you know which way they went. Quote
supertweet Posted February 7, 2012 Author Report Posted February 7, 2012 o.k., everything bagged and tagged, took a few photos, marked main caps, need large socket for crank bolt at pulley, thats the only hold up, then out with crank and cam and see where were at. thx. Dave Quote
