Roger the Dodger Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 I bought this overdrive and parts yesterday. But I did not get the gearbox part only the casing. I put the standard case and o/d cases together and I can see I need more parts, because of the extra holes. What do I need ? I have a spare 3 speed complete, is it possible to use the gears and shafts out of this in the o/d case plus whatever else is needed ? Thanks, Roger. Quote
1941Rick Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Yes......change out the mainshaft from your 3 speed, make sure the case you use is the one you have the drill bit on. A hint that was passed on to me is to use an elastic band to hold the rollers on the sprag clutch when assembling the O/D..... Quote
martybose Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Isn't there also an OD-unique reverse gear shifter that goes through the case into the OD unit to force it into direct when you shift into reverse? Marty Quote
blueskies Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 I used the gears from my stock three speed in my OD rebuild. The reverse shift rail in the OD case is longer, and extends into the overdrive half to the reverse lockout switch. Pete Quote
1941Rick Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 The shift rail in the OD extends into the main transmission...When you have selected OD and use reverse the reverse shift rail shifts the OD out, if you follow my drift....a word of caution...when you have selected OD with the dash control and park the car, it will freewheel so always select no OD and set the park brake Quote
Roger the Dodger Posted November 30, 2011 Author Report Posted November 30, 2011 Thanks for the replies. So the extended reverse shift rail is the only part I am missing? If anyone else has any comments, feel free to chime in. Thanks, Roger. Quote
suntennis Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 If you do not have a book on OD or at least the shop manual, there is an excellent web site if it is still up that shows rebuild of an OD. Check out http://www.classictruckshop.com/clubs/earlyburbs/projects/t85n/rebuild.htm Quote

Jim Yergin Posted November 30, 2011 Report Posted November 30, 2011 You can also find a download of the Borg Warner Overdrive Manual in the Downloads section of P15-D24.Com. I found it very helpful. Jim Yergin Quote
