Barabbas Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 I'm a bit of a packrat, anytime I updgrade Doris I save the original part "just in case" I want to return her to original. Unfortunately I only have a 12x8 shop to house all my tools etc and saved treasures. Last year I put in an Overdrive, and stored the old 3 spd tranny inside a cardboard box and a construction strength garbage bag. So the old tranny has been stored safely in the backyard for a year. Well it's no longer safe--I have a 5 month old lab puppy that like all labs eats everything. The construction garbage sack and cardboard box are shreds. So it's time to find a new home for the Tranny. Before I try to sell it, I would offer it free to anyone in the Puget Sound area, who will pick it up (or I could meet you at a Ferry dock). The transmission and parking break worked very well when I took them off of my '52 Cranbrook Quote

Barabbas Posted September 5, 2011 Author Report Posted September 5, 2011 Don, This forum has taught me so much, and the people here are truly supportive of each other--so if I can keep someone here running, I'm happy to do it Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 That pup doesn't look like he realizes what he's done. In fact, he looks like he's looking for something else to chew on. Quote
Barabbas Posted September 5, 2011 Author Report Posted September 5, 2011 oh you know just the standard: shoes, drainpipes, drapes, furniture legs Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 . . . bath oil beads, eyeglasses. Trust me, it happened. Quote
Greenbomb Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 We had a couch potato yellow Lab. Had to put her down, so we rescued another from Tillamook, Oregon. Named her "Tillie". She turned out to be a REAL Lab!!!!!!! We turned her over to a family on a lake with 4 kids and a couple other dogs. The 10 yo boy and her latched on to each other and she's happy as a clam. She was just too much for us two old farts! I also have a transmission that is in your same situation. If anyone can use it, let me know. Quote
Barabbas Posted September 6, 2011 Author Report Posted September 6, 2011 Well "Hero"'s papers says he's a real lab but the first time he saw salt water, he got his front paws wet and turned around and went back to dig in the beach. He never did get all 4 paws wet--I think he's a gene short Quote
mrwrstory Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Keep the trans,....just in case and give me the Lab. Quote
Barabbas Posted September 6, 2011 Author Report Posted September 6, 2011 MR BiLL, LOL-there are moments when I might consider that offer, but they quickly pass. Actually he isn't really mine, he is going to be a Service Dog (wheelchair assistance), I just raise him for a year and then he goes on to higher education Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 And he chews the wheels off the wheelchair. Quote

I might have an interest in doing the same. Quote
Barabbas Posted September 6, 2011 Author Report Posted September 6, 2011 Don, Most of the programs around here tend to be independant Non-profits. The org that I am working with is Summit Assitance Dogs (http://www.summitdogs.org/). The org. provides the dog some basic dog stuff (leash, crate etc) and training. Hero and I go to classes once a week with about 5 other dogs/trainers. Our primary duty is to teach basic obedience (including "doing his business" on command) and to give the dog as many experiences as possible so he will react calmly to most stimuli that he encounters. Hero and I have been to Cruise-ins, Small airports, farmer's markets, long ferry rides, sports bars, skateparks, day care, diners, playgrounds etc. It has been a lot of fun and very rewarding but it will be tough when it's time for him to move on. I will keep him about 1 year, then he goes on to 10 weeks in a prison where inmates will give more intensive training and then 4-6 months of specialized training by a proffessional. He will have 18-20 months of training before he goes to his person. I thinkif you google "assistance dogs Tennessee" you should be able to find some local org. Mike Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Thanks, I will investigate... Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Mike, I hope your dog doesn't pick up any bad habits in prison. Quote
Barabbas Posted September 7, 2011 Author Report Posted September 7, 2011 I'm afraid he'll like it--he loves to sleep in his cage (I know crate is the correct term but it sure looks like a cage) Quote
Barabbas Posted September 7, 2011 Author Report Posted September 7, 2011 the transmission has found a home! Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Great! Where is the new home? Quote
Barabbas Posted September 7, 2011 Author Report Posted September 7, 2011 On Whidbey Island, just a Ferry ride away--in a '49 Suburban Quote
49roadster Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Well I met Mike today and he is just as nice as we all thought he sounded. He even tossed in a master cylinder core. He was looking for a bumper jack for his '52. I had one I think will be right. We both went away happy and each with a new friend. Quote
Barabbas Posted September 8, 2011 Author Report Posted September 8, 2011 Ross, Hero and I both enjoyed meeting you---your Suburban is spectacular.I look forward to seeing your Roadster. Once I get my head painted and new gasket installed, I'll put Doris on the Ferry and come over and see the rest of your heard. BTW, The bumper Jack is a perfect fit, thanks! Quote
