Aaron Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 I am finally working on getting my wipers going. Question, is there any maintenance i need to perform on this motor to get it working? I tried hooking it up to the vacuum on the manifold and it only moves slightly and then stopped working. do i need to take it apart and do anything to it? Also the switch on top seems to be stripped inside, so when you turn it, it does not 'grip' and turn the switch on the motor. any ideas on how to fix that? Seems like there should be a flat piece that slides in it that is missing?? Any other usefull info that someone has experienced that you feel would help me on this project would be appreciated! MBF Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 I had the same problem. If I remember correctly, a little penetrating oil on the pivot, and through the vacuum connection-work by hand and then hook up to a vacuum source. It may take a few times. If that still doesn't help, there are folks that rebuild these. They're usually pretty trouble free. Sounds like you need a new control knob. Mike Quote
49roadster Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 My switch knob was missing the flat spring that fits down the center of that knob. I had an extra radio knob and the spring from that fit the wiper knob. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 You going to have your truck out for hot summer nights? Sadly it sounds like we won't be making it again this summer. Quote
buds truck Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 I had great luck with one in a 38 chevy years ago by just squirting oil into the vacuum hole and letting it sit awhile. Then I hooked it up and started shutting it on and off. The diaphram swelled up with the oil (they can get dry) and worked perfectly. Quote
Aaron Posted August 24, 2011 Author Report Posted August 24, 2011 Ed, I don't think I will display it this year, but will sure try for next year. Maybe you can make it over for that one. Aaron Quote
Young Ed Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 Sounds good. If we're ever in town without 1000 things going on I'll have to send you a PM. Typically when we go its an action packed weekend with no free time. Quote
HanksB3B Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 if all else fails, Robert Ficken is the fricken best there is: I took mine apart (DON'T!) in hopes of rebuilding it myself. The gasket was disintegrated to the point of not being able to be scanned and re-made. The type and the amount of grease seems to be some sort of magic too. So if you want, give it your best shot and if all else fails give Robert a call. Mine couldn't be fixed. He happened to have this one available: Hank Quote
