mach0415 Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 (edited) Hey folks. It has been some time since my last visit. I am trying to hunt down the OE carb rebuild kit for my 1947 P15. It has a 3 spd - no fluid drive, as it is running pretty crappy and always has since I have owned it. It is not on the road yet. I am getting ready to rebuild the Stromberg carb on it and have identified it as a BXVD-3. According to my research, this was for a car equipped with fluid drive. Is this correct? If so, can I proceed as planned? If any of you have this carb, would you mind posting a few pics? Edited July 15, 2011 by mach0415 Quote
48mirage Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 That Stromberg was for the fluid drive cars with a 3 speed manual transmission. The difference being the Stromberg had a dashpot to slow down the drop to idle to benefit the Stromberg. It would probably work well with your P15 but if you are dedicated to originality you would be looking for the Carter. Quote

I am going to run the carb until I get tired of it. Then I may go to dual intake/dual exhaust. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 I see no reason for it not to work. If it was the other way around and you had a Dodge with a fluid drive than a regular none dash pot carburetor would not work. I tried a carburetor that was not set up for my fluid drive and it just wouldn't ideal when coming to a stop. Quote
48mirage Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 I doubt if the dashpot has been removed. It is internal to the carb (not bolted on the outside like we are used to seeing) If you look around on the stromberg you will see second rod that looks like an accellerator pump but not adjustable like the accellerator pump. This one is the dashpot. And yes you will be fine with it. Once you change over to a different setup you will probably find some interested in the Stromberg. Quote
busycoupe Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 My '48 D24 coupe has fluid drive. Somewhere along the line, the engine was changed to an early 50's Plymouth engine. The carb on it is a Carter, without the dashpot for fluid drive. I thought about changing it, but it runs fine with the Carter carb. It doesn't stall or stumble. I am going to leave as it is. Thanks for the info on that. Yes there is a dashpot then internally. I see the secondary rod, so that makes sense. Quote
