greg g Posted June 4, 2011 Report Posted June 4, 2011 Took an 80 mile round trip to attend a cruise in /show today. On the way home, i began to notice a drive line vibration begining at just under 50, and smoothing out at 62. I just had some work done on the rear pinion seal, so I guess I will need to get uder neath and check stuff. Perhaps it will be as simple as rotating the drive shaft, maybe the guys at the shop did not index the shaft when they did the work. Or maybe they didn't get the pinion torque just right. I had a very slight vibe before the work was done and hadn't had it out on the highway until today. I have another drive shaft and a couple u joints but I hope I do not need to go that far. The pinion repair requited a speedy sleeve as well as the new seal, but that shouldn't have caused a problem. Quote
Tom Skinner Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 Greg, I hope you get under there and check to see if its indexed correctly. This is why I do all of my own work on my cars for 38 years. I hope you get it resolved. I torqued my pinion nut down hard to 120 - 130 (all I could eat with my old Torque Wrench) but I think it calls for more and I have no Vibration. A Damned Good Drive Shaft Mechanic will tell you heat from the Muffler can warp a Drive Shaft after a while. When he puts it on a Lathe and uses a Torch with cold water - if he knows what he's doing he will True it up for you (Balance it) Good Luck! Tom Quote
greg g Posted June 6, 2011 Author Report Posted June 6, 2011 Well I went about 20 miles to a show today na no vibration. Guess I will just let it be unless it crops up again. Quote
55 Fargo Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 Well I went about 20 miles to a show today na no vibration. Guess I will just let it be unless it crops up again. My 47 did something similar the other day, when I was driving in a wicked cross wind on a highway that was rough, not surewhy, but it did, and was okay afterwards... Quote
