thrashingcows Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) I've been trying to get the front crank pulley hub off my crank for several days now. The motor is in the car so there isn't a ton of room. I've soaked it in penetrating fluid for days and days, then cycled heat on and off. I've been using a 2 bolt puller and have bent the heck out of it trying to get that hub off the crank. Anyone have any tricks I could try? Edited May 11, 2011 by thrashingcows Quote
thrashingcows Posted May 11, 2011 Author Report Posted May 11, 2011 I'm trying to remove it, and then the front timing case cover, before Fernando goes into storage for the summer. Then I can work on installing my A/C compressor and newer alternator on my good motor. Hope to have all this done, and more, before I bring Fernando back this coming winter. Quote
Fluid drive Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Had the same thing on my '47 Windsor a few years ago. The only way I could remove it was by the use of a friend's beam type puller. That puller was strong enough to pull the thing free. The puller in question is manufactured by Proto Tools -- if you have access to one it will get that off for you. Fluid Drive Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 I am assuming you have removed the large nut that holds it on. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Your in the car removal is tight. I raise the engines up to remove the pulley hub when doing a in the car front seal or timing chain set. I use really well made pullers too-they don't give, they will remove what I need removed. You need a bit more room and keep tightening. Like already mentioned if the puller you have won't work- get a good quality beam puller and it will come off. Shouldn't ever need heat, just a bigger puller-then tighten the puller a lot more! It'll come off. Bob Quote
thrashingcows Posted May 12, 2011 Author Report Posted May 12, 2011 Yup nut is off....and can you believe the motor sat for unknown decades with no oil pan, rusty and crusty, and the friggin crank started to spin when I tried to remove the nut...go figure. This thing will not budge. I only have a couple more days before it goes to storage. So I will keep trying, but if I can't get it off I might be looking for a spare hub. Quote
Flatie46 Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 What kind of penatrating oil? I like Aero kroil myself, I really think it makes a difference when it's something really stuck. Quote

Andydodge Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 If you find that any sort of penentrating oil works then you DO have a problem as the hub is not supposed to have any clearance that would allow the oil to get in...........have you checked to see whether the bolt on the puller has bottomed out?...........you may have to use a longer bolt or wind it out then place a nut(or replace the actual large bolt almost in again and screw the puller bolt onto the head of the large bolt) inside the hole so that the bolt doesn't bottom out, also see if you can place a block of wood as a wedge between the pulley and the chassis to stop the pulley spinning as you try to tighten the puller centre bolt...........andyd Quote
