p24-1953 Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Today I noticed that the warmer the temp guage read, the faster my idle increased. I have the stock carb and intake with a man. choke. What could cause this? what is the reccomended steps to set the idle speed properly? Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 I recommend you lubricate your linkage and check your throttle return spring. I had to add a heavier throttle return spring on my engine to get it to idle correctly. In the old days one of the tricks shoddy mechanics would pull was to install a throttle return spring that offered less resistance. The car owner would then beleive that his or her car was running a lot better because it did not require as much pressure on the accelerator pedal to get up to speed. Quote
p24-1953 Posted May 10, 2011 Author Report Posted May 10, 2011 so don your thinking the heat is causing the spring to loose tension and increase the idle? so when its high i should be able to pull the throtle back and lower the idle to test that idea correct? Quote
greg g Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 more likely stiction in the linkage agrivated by high underhood temps. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Greg, I never heard the word "stiction" before, but its perfect! Quote
greg g Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 Also check your high idle cam on the throttle pivot in the carb base to make sure it is being pulled off when the choke opens. Quote

p24-1953 Posted May 10, 2011 Author Report Posted May 10, 2011 did today, resest the idle speed and idle mixture according to the manual and it was pulling a good vaccum. we will see how it does in the next few days. Quote
