47heaven Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 What's the easiest way to get the horn wire through the stearing column without having to take the column out...or does the column have to come out for this? Is there a hole on the bottom of the column near the stearing box where the wire comes out? I looked and couldn't find one. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 The easiest way is to pull the new wire through using the old wire I'm going to assume you are beyond that method so try taping the new wire to a straightened out coat hanger or something like that. Certainly no need to remove the column. The wire just goes straight through and comes out the bottom. Quote

That column may be too loong for a coat hanger. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Pretty sure its a straight shot so I dont think it will be too hard. Quote
david lazarus Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Seems to be the same system as on my '38, which also had no pre-existing wire. Try to find something...anything that is long, thin and ridgid (fencing wire, thin copper piping even heavier gauge wire) and use this to pilot your wire down. To check that the shaft is not obstructed set up a light down under the car aimed at the steering box and then look down the shaft from inside the car....no light then something may be blocking it. Mine took less than a minute to feed down, but you want to remove the curl that the wire can have if you feed it stright off the reel. Quote
Lou Earle Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Get some bailing wire and push it thru from the bottom-there is a hole there and in case you forget- unwind the wire before u try and push it thru either end- much easier. Really, if you use 10 or 12 guage wire you can just push it thru agian unwind it first!!! Lou Quote
John Mulders Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 yes, just start from below, the wire (straighten a bit before inserting) will come out on the top. Reverse route requires you to fish for the wire through a small hole. John Quote
mikemaker Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 The hole is small, it's towards the front. You may need to wipe off the steering box to find it. Then go up from the bottom, it's easier that way for sure. Quote

That would really help. Quote
james curl Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 If you go to the very end of the steering box you will find a flat plate held on wirh four screws. In the center of the plate you will find a hole, this is the hole that the wire comes out of the steering colum. The wire does not rotate with the steering wheel as it is inside of the hollow steering shaft which has the screw that turns the shaft assembly by roller to rotate the pitman arm. You will probably have to be under the car to see the hole on the plate. You should find a loose wire with a female fiting on the end in the vicinity for the horn wire to plug into. Quote
