55 Fargo Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 I am trying to do a few things on the 47 these days. I have a nice oil bath stock air cleaner, new paint decal etc. I am not really into cutting it open, to retrofit a paper filter. Pat S brought me an early 50s air filter, I have cut out the innards but have not sized it up yet, am not sure what size filter I will need yet. I now have it on the bench, and may bead blast the outside, and paint it first, then fit new filter and use it for daily driving, and maybe keep the stock filter for what ever, maybe car shows. I have also considered, buy a billet smaller air cleaner, or some aftermarket air cleaner set-up. Anyone have any ideas on this one? I am doing some small projects right now, until the snow melts, then a few bigger items after that, such as the pinion seal.... Quote
RobertKB Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Fred, nothing wrong with the oil bath. They work well even on gravel roads such as you have. Car manufacturers went to the paper filters as they were cheaper to produce and less mess to change. Keep what you got. My 2 cents worth and they may not even be worth that. You will likely hear both sides of the issue and it comes down to personal choice. Quote
Robert Horne Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 A word on billet aluminum. I found much of this under my kitchen sink, namely cooking pot lids. One lid on bottom, and one on the top, with a Fram 3647, 8 1/2 inch, in the middle, looking good. Quote

Niel Hoback Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 I have converted to a paper element and I think it starts better in the winter. However, I kept the oil bath filter in case I should feel "authentic" for some reason. I doubt that there is much difference in the filters abilities to clean air. I am glad I kept my original and would encourage you to do the same even if you go for an entirely different set-up. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 Here are my choice, the stock OEM filter, which is still oil bath and will continue to be so. The filter from Pat S, not fitted with a paper element yet. The carb, and filter base from y 1955 Fargo engine, this is one that baffles me, as it has the threaded rod, but what kind of filter housing goes on this, I have no idea. Quote
Desotodav Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 I went with a sneaky modification on the oil bath air filter for my 51 Desoto truck. The new oil soaked foam is much easier to clean than the original hair filled filter design. It would be pretty hard to spot the modification - even to the enthusiast. I just need to add the decal that I got from The Old Plym Cafe now. Desotodav Quote
