greg g Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I am installing a new chain and sprockets on my MC (78 Kawasaki KZ650) and I ordered an "O" ring chain. This would be my first experience with this type. The information in the box tell how to clean and lubricate it, but this appears to be chain maintenance instructions. It comes in a bag with a white greasy substance on it. As I understand it "O" ring chains are prelubricated and sealed with the O rings, and that any additional lubricant would be for the chain to sprocket interface. My question is should I follow the cleaning instructions, to remove this stuff, install the chain, and re lube it, or leave this stuff on, run it a couple hundred miles then do the clean and lube deal. Kate the P15 Bizzy Coupe is an interested onlooker, having her cover half removed and being attached to the battery charger. Tomorrow may be her day. Quote

Merle Coggins Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 Chain Lube is kind of a misnomer. You really don't want anything on your chain that will attract dirt. As you say, the O-ring chain is lubed and sealed to keep the lube inside. On the outside you just want to keep it clean and free of grit and grime. Most "Chain Lubes" are a type of cleaner with a lube that should dry up after a few minutes. I'd clean the chain, but not with any harsh chemicals that can harm the o-rings, then install it and spray with some Chain Lube and RIDE. merle Quote
