Has anyone ever done anything on what all will bolt up to a stock PH 4 speed trans? I'm taking the winter to ponder what will go into my 49 Dodge and the more I think the more I want a few more ponies under the hood, but not the pain and anguish of swapping out the trans and buggering up all the clutch and brake pedals...

So with that...anyone know of any "newer" chrys/dodge engine that will bolt up other then a newer flathead?

If not I would like to find one of the latest flatheads out there and shoot for one of those...what was the last year they produced the same style block? I have a 25" now and would like a 23 if I have to go that way.

I'm confused - you want more ponies, but a smaller motor? I'm guessing that your 25" motor, no matter which one you have, is bigger than the 23" one you'd get, no matter which one you get.

A little freshening up, maybe a few tricks like a shaved head, would probably go a long way.

You would be wrong, the 25" only has 87 stock hp in a 49 CDN truck, and the 23" were all in the 90's as far as I know, even my buddies 2 door 49 coupe 23" has something like 95 hp

I want either a 4.2L jeep or a V8 or something else if I can bolt to the tranny, OR a later motor that has the most power and reliability. My motor is done...rod right through the pan and I can just imagine the block...so it's POOCHED

Well, that is a different picture. I can see why using your existing motor isn't a good option.

I have a 51 Fargo, long block motor, and I assumed it would be a bigger motor than that. Guess I need to run the numbers and figure out just what I have, too. Maybe the Desoto motor I have laying here would be a better choice.

Which brings me to another suggestion. Find a Chrysler, Desoto or US built bigger truck motor. Plenty of bigger motors around and they'd bolt right up.

For example, the '48 Chrysler 6 is 114 HP, 54 is 119. 52 Desoto is 116. Shave the head of any of them and gain a few more HP.

A truck motor will have a different cam and be more torque than HP, but a new cam can change that.

And this is all bolt in.

And without too much work you can put a T5 5spd behind the flathead for better cruising. Swap the rear end out and you'll have a nice cruiser.

4mula-dlx,

Your present 25" motor must be a 218 to only put out 87 hp. If you can find a 25" Chrysler 251 from say a 49 or newer the hp rating is 116. Or you could find a later model Dodge 23" 230 from 56-59 which are rated at over 130 hp.

Ed, once you put the T5 in with it's overdrive, would you think a different rear end would be in order? I think they're usually around a .7 final drive, so it would seem it would be about right.

No you could easily leave the 4.10 and have a good ratio. Most of the guys who do the trans swap also go to disk brakes up front and then want a more modern diff with better(self adjusting) brakes in the rear. I'm collecting parts for a t5 project of my own and the rear end is one part I'm undecided on. I'm concerned a 3.73 with OD will be too high a gear for a 218 flathead.

I'm running a 3:73 gearing diff now, it's out of a cherokee, and have already done the front brake conversion, but I would think that the T5 swap forces you to remove the stock tras mount/brake and clutch mount, unless you can make that T5 swap to that bell housing without a lot of mess? I would do that if I could, as I need to make a new drive shaft anyway. When I did the diff sawp I was short about 2" on the DS so I had to get mine extended but they didn't balance it and it vibrates pretty bad.

FYI my truck is a 1 ton, so that's why the diff swap made a difference...in a 1/2 ton you can use the stock DS as far as I know

Yes by drilling 4 new holes and adding a couple spacers etc I was able to adapt a T5 to the stock bellhousing. The spacers are to make the T5 a tight fit in the bellhousing hole and one for the throwout bearing down to the T5 input shaft size. The stock pedals are retained.
