53_Suburban Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 After "going for a ride" in Rodney Bullocks 40 Plymouth thread, I decided to stick a camera and tripod in the Suburban. Here's my Sunday morning drive in Los Altos this morning. Since the only available camera I had shot the video in the "Quick Time Movie" format, I wasn't able to edit out the "Big Black Hand" at the beginning, but otherwise it turned out OK. http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y201/wo_jojo/cars/?action=view¤t=100_4421.mp4 Quote
TodFitch Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 I seem to set the tripod too low. Seems like you set it a bit high. Maybe we should average each other out. Nice video. I almost did not believe it was Los Altos with all the curbs and even sidewalks. The part of Los Altos that my in-laws lived in was bereft of such suburban/urban amenities. What computer/software do you have? iMovie was packaged with a bunch of Mac versions and at least the one I have makes it pretty easy to edit your video. And at least versions the of QuickTime file format actually follow published industry standards so editing software on Windows or Linux should be available. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Cool video! I gotta get me a tripod. Tom Quote

The first part of the ride was from Arastradero Road near the Roche campus down Foothill Expressway to Edith Ave in Los Altos. Edith is on the edge of downtown Los Altos where they actually do have sidewalks. My parents house is on a corner lot on the Mtn View-Los Altos border. The neighbor behind them petitioned for rezoning from Los Altos to Mountain View and the cities agreed. Within a month of his property becoming Mountain View he recieved new sidewalks and a huge property tax reduction. Go figure. I have a custom built PC running Windows XP Professional. I have both Windows Movie maker and Nero Showtime and Media Ess. Neither of them would read the file on the SD card. Quote
PhilJohnson Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Looks nice out there. Up here the salt trucks were out already Quote

I've never turned off of it on to Edith though. Foothill to Junipero Serra is one way of getting to many places in Palo Alto. Usually get on or off Foothill at Fremont or Grant however. If worse comes to worse, there is an open source program called ffmpeg that can deal with an amazing variety of video formats. It is a command line program which can be good or bad depending on what you are doing. With ffmpeg you can translate the video to a different format that your editing programs do understand. Trick is using a good set of options so the you don't lose too much quality. Price is right since it is free. On Linux and Mac there are also open source GUIs to allow the point and click crowd to use it easier. I'd expect the same for Windows. Quote
1940plymouth Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Thanks for sharing your ride and the surrounding scenery Quote
PatS.... Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Thanks for the ride...that was fun. Love the sound of the flat six. Looks like you won't need snow tires with studs like we need for the next 5 months. Quote
