Running rough!

Well I have finished the tune up and rebuilt the carb but she is running rough and spitting fuel out the top of the carb. Does this sound like a carb issue or something more?

Thanks for your help forum!

After checking the timing and float levels and if it still is running rough, check your valve springs. When I bought my coupe it was running real rough too. Rebuilt the carb and tuned it up and it didn't help. Felt like a reducing machine when the engine ran. As it finally turned out, I had 2 broken valve springs and a piece of one of the springs stuck in a third spring, so it was only half working. So, all the tune ups in the world would not have helped that. That's when I pulled the engine and did a total rebuild.

Is your truck equipped with vacuum wipers? Sometimes the rubber hose to them is dried out and cracked creating a vacuum leak. Something as simple as this will make the poor neglected thing run like a piece a doo doo. Check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold gaskets and the carb gasket. Check the easy stuff first.

Is it possible it could be as simple as the firing order? How do you adjust the valves on this flathead motor? The wipers work without the motor running so I think that I'm okay there. Could still be a vacuum leak though. I did pull the wires off one at a time while running and I could only notice a difference on two of the six cylinders. Its school al over again......

Reg, I will take the bed....Hallelujah :D Can we make the trailer road worthy? I forgot to ask if there is any cancer??????

I took out spark plug #1 and put my finger in it. Then cranked it to check the firing order. It didn't blow my finger out.....bummer. Could it still be a simple valve adjustment or is it rebuild time?

If the engine has been idle for a while it could be a valve stuck in the open position. Sometimes just running it up to operating temperature while pouring some Marvel Mystery Oil(or equal) down the carb will free it up.

There may one important item that is being overlooked. The fuel spitting out of the carb. Is this due to internal compression forcing it out or is it due to excessive fuel in the area of the carb throat? I just completed one of two 1935 Ford restorations for a customer. In both cases the carbs were rebuilt. Also, in both cases the fuel tanks were replaced when the restorations were started, by another shop, over 15 years ago. Over the years, the fuels in those tanks dried up leaving deposits in the tanks. These deposits started to break down and migrated from the tank into the fuel lines. We found that the needle and seat at the carb inlet was being held open by these deposits as they entered the carb. This on both vehicles. So... since removal of the tanks require lifting the body off of the vehicles, the customer elected to just have us install an in line fuel filter below the vehicle. It will require changing often until all of these deposits are gone. (The filter was installed BEFORE the fuel pump to keep the deposits out of the pump which might have caused the reed type check valves in the pump to stay open.) When the needle and seats were held open loads of fuel entered that carb and over ran into the throttle area and was flowing from the top of the carb. These vehicles ran real poorly. So, have a look at this possability.

By the way, I see that you are located in Julien, Ca. I am in Wildomar near Temecula. The wife and I visit Julien often and have stayed in some of the B&B's there. We love it up there. Lucky you!!!

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info... The first thing I need to do now is figure our how to get the firing order set correct, lol I just can't find #1 on the distributor since I can't feel the pressure.

Julian is great. Far enough away from the big city, yet close enough if you need something.

It was the firing order. I had to set it with pressure from #5 Cyln. Started running a little rough but no carb spitting. I did like Reg said and put some marvel down the carb once warm. Runs like a champ now with no smoke. Although I did end up with a bit of an electrical fire  I guess I should just replace the wiring harness...

Thanks for all the ideas! Now on to the brakes. It has no pedal. I guess I will start with fliud in the master...
