richards47deluxe Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 so i changed the water pump out today. put everything back together and it started leaking at top where pump meets the block. Any ideas?? cleaned all surfaces, glued gasket to water pump, applies a thin film of silicone between pump and block, put silicone on bolts and still leaks. used air to blow off water and it is definitely between block and water pump. so what's the scoop?? Greenbomb Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Is there any way the bolts are bottoming out before they get tight enough? Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 (edited) I see you did seal the bolts, my bad. I believe there are two types of backing plate for these. One has a hole for a by-pass I believe. If it is different from your original you may have to swap plates. Edited October 11, 2010 by jd52cranbrook Quote
richards47deluxe Posted October 11, 2010 Author Report Posted October 11, 2010 Good thought on the bypass hole. with the cap off, there should be no pressure but i did notice a steady stream of water. gonna pull tomorrow morning and compare. wondering if i can get another gasket local. Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 If not, I think you can put some sealant on there and let it get tacky or a bit rubbery before you tighten the plate bolts up snug. Quote
richards47deluxe Posted October 11, 2010 Author Report Posted October 11, 2010 thanks JD. will try that. Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 YW,, did you hook up with Vargas Upholstery? Quote
richards47deluxe Posted October 11, 2010 Author Report Posted October 11, 2010 I did JD. He was going on vacation. I gave him my number and he was going to call when he got back. Thanks for the lead. Quote
oldcarlover Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Definetely use sealant on bolts but not on back of pump or on block. If you glue the gasket to the back of pump and let set, you should be ok. Also don't overtighten. Quote
richards47deluxe Posted October 12, 2010 Author Report Posted October 12, 2010 I think what i did was tighten the middle bolt first then the 2 end ones. re-did the installation now there is a very small leak from one of the backing plate bolts. going to drain some water, back out that bolt. apply some silicone and hopefully that will stop it. At least now I can remove the radiator and water pump blindfolded now. Quote
Tom Skinner Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Richard. There is a Gasket between the backing Plate and Pump that needs gasket sealant also - do both sides - then bolt it to the pump. Then butter up the gasket between the Pump and Block and then bolt to the Block. That Backing Plate needs Gasket Sealer on the Gasket between it and the Pump. I first put a Water Pump on a Flat Head back in the mid 70's and didn't seal that "inbetween" Gasket and then learned it must be done also. Good Luck! You can make your own gaskets from a roll of Water Pump Gasket Material with Sicsors and a Hole Punch real easy. Tom Quote
