oldblue51 Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 The starter in my 51 B3B was working but quit. It appears that the coil brush wiring connections are rubbing against the armature (due to loss of insulation I think). I don't see any way to fix this short of replacing the coils or having these re-insulated. Would welcome any suggestions. Quote
JBNeal Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 I've had good luck with the local starter/alternator service. With the exception of a starter pinion clutch shearing apart, no problems since they dismantled, cleaned & replaced brushes & bushings for $60 over 10 years ago. The guy who owned the place took one look at my starter and knew it came off of a 50s Dodge (late 40s actually). He had the tools & equipment to test, and his turnaround time was a couple of days. Don Coatney Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 If you elect to do your own repairs I had good luck getting brushes from these folks. To check for wear the last picture is the measurement of a new brush. Quote
Dave72dt Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 You might be able to slide some shrink tubing over the leads for insulation. Quote
