Just installed 2 new front windows with the help from my son,a piece of strong rope and lots of soap.Purchased new front window rubber from Andy B and was quite pleased.Goes in real easy after reading previous posts...thanks all.

So now that it's in,I have to install the two 3 sided metal frames on the inside. Before it was painted, there was a strip of what looked to be some kind of leather product stapled around the frames.First, what purpose does it serve and and second is there a source for replacement.

and can be purchased at Roberts for sure. It needs to be trimmed so that approximately 1/2" (do a test fit piece) of the flat part remains (enough so that it is squeezed in place as the frame is secured.

OK, I was not aware of this stuff until just now. I will need to get some too.

What is it's function? To keep the trim from rattling I'll bet.

Parts Book calls it welt, P/N 23-113-50. Guess I better call Gary!

Hank, would that be the welt that goes between the box and the rear fenders? If so,I have some and could trim it down as you suggested.

If you have more than enough be sure to make a couple of 2" or 3" samples with the tab (flat ribbon portion) 1/2" 5/8" (you get the idea..and test fit.

The screws that secure the frame are a little tricky and I suspect they are drilled in place into the cab so the angles can be wierd and are probably different from cab to cab. I used a short piece of hanger wire to poke around to get an eyeball measurement to approximate the angle and then had a good idea how to get the screw in. (you'll see what I mean once you get started) On a scale of 1-10 this job is a two.

Have B4B 53 1/2 ton. Finishing up the rebuild. Put in the windshield 2 weeks ago. Now putting in the 3 sided strips about the windshield. I don't remember seeing anything between the rubber and the strips. Do the strips you are talking about actually have a function. Does yours look any better with the strips you are making? I would appreciate a picture showing what you are talking about.

the window frame welt probably has a dual purpose: to keep the window frame off of the cab (anti-squeak), and to hide any imperfections between the frame & the cab.

Great pics...I'm having some trouble with the window frame and the new rubber ie ...the inside metal frame moulding doesn't touch the rubber;ther is about a 1/2"gap ...so I either have the rubber in backwards or the supplier is sending out s#!*.The thicker half of the rubber is on the outside which kinda tells me now that maybe I have installed it wrong.During installation, the only reference that I had was that there were 2 grooves down the center section of the old rubber that were on the outside and this is how I installed the new rubber.Anyone have pics or suggestions?

I have the same situation with my front window frame.

I just recently remove the frame and refinished it, but I had to remove the old lacing (welt) because it was falling apart. The old welt was stapled to the back side of the window frame.

I replaced the refinished frames without any welt behind it. There's a pretty good size gap between the windshield and the frame now. I'd like to fill that with something as well, so if you find something that works, let me know.

Here's what mine looked like before I removed it.

Roberts and probably every vintage automobile supplier has it. It not an expensive item and it doesn't need to be stapled. The pressure exerted on the frame by the screws will hold it in place.

Or you can contact cement it to the back side of the frame to hold it in place while installing.

Gee....maybe I should practice what I preach.:o

I will after I get the trim chrome plated.:D

Reg I really like your fan placement, how were you inspired to place it there? And do you get plenty of movement?

How wide do you reckon the replacement welt would need to be to look original?

How wide is the inside windshield trim?

My truck is 200 miles away so I can't go measure it until Thanksgiving.

Thanks!

Just finished my trim and I cut the welt down to 1 1/4".The pressure from the metal trim holds the welt in nicely. You might have to trim down the part that goes over the defrost vents a little more so that it doesn't interfere with airflow.
