Hi all, I've peddled around here before, looking at pics, etc while going through the paces mildy rodding my 55 Dodge 1/2 ton .....more on that later, but since I've seemingly scored a 1950 Dodge special deluxe 4 door sedan, mostly original and apparently almost all there , four blocks away, for :cool:50.00 bucks ! :cool:I paid him tonight and have the bill of sale...and after I looked at it last weekend I made the deal, which included throwing a rebuilt starter that I had for the guys dodge truck, so he could get it running and move it where the car is, when i get the car out. I went Sunday, blocked the car up and removed all the wheels, all badly cracked flat tires..the car has sat there since 1988 ish....I'm working on getting a set of roller tires for the rims, I'll have to look closely at the driver side wheels, they seem to have been a bit more in the dirt and one of the lips seemed flaky.......we'll seepost-6780-1358535691234_thumb.jpg

and he noted the 6 was siezed.....of well, maybe a small block mopar and torquflite would fit the bill for this one.

Luckily the front wheels are free, but the rear wheels are stuck, i think i will move it out and jack up the rear and drop the drive shaft, then flat tow it home.

my pickup will be fun, 90 Dakota frame, 440 built, pushbutton shift from a 57 truck, 8 3/4 " with gears eventually....., but you can't cruise 4 people in a cab here......even my wife said it looked "cool" and was happy with the deal...bonus.

now I'm furiously reading all the info on these models......lifelong MOPAR guy, still schooling myself on the 50's and now the late 40's as well., maybe in a few years i'll get a 1933 Chrysler and give the 30's a go :D

a question, what are the chances it has fluid drive without badges stating so?

best, hope to see more 50's here !

I'd say the chance is good that it has fluid drive.

I can't recall where it states that fact, but it will be on the

exterior somewhere, unless trim is missing. I think there

was some script on the front fenders.

The Canadian Dodge that has Fluid Drive is the big Coronet. Yours is a "Plodge" The Canadian Dodge was a Plymouth with Dodge badging. No idea why.

Bill Watson may chime in here with the full story.

From Allpar: http://www.allpar.com/world/canada.html (If I recall, Bill Watson said there were some inaccuracies in Allpar's article)

Unless someone installed it, your car won't have factory Fluid Drive OR the M6 semi automatic transmission.

You can test it by trying to put the column shift lever in first gear...towards you and down...if it goes in you have a regular 3 speed manual, not an M6.

To check for Fluid Drive, when the car is running, let out the clutch. Fluid Drive won't stall.

Here's a Fluid Drive bellhousing. The filler hole and the openings are the identifying marks of Fluid Drive inside.

You can also look from underneath by removing the cover. Inside will be a fluid coupling that looks like a torque converter with the starter ring gear on it. (if you have fluid drive)

If you have a regular flywheel, no fluid drive.

I have never seen Fluid Drive in the smaller bodied Canadian Dodge (Plodge)

This would most likely be a 218, 3 spd trans, 3.90 or 3.73 rear end.

There may be sources for those missing DODGE letters in Manitoba.

You might even find another running flathead 6 to use in this car, if that is interest for you. I think I may have a set of park light lenses aan bezels for your car, if you want them...........Fred

Welcome to the forum, I have a cousin to your Dodge, a 50 Plymouth Club Coupe. If you have any questions this is the place to be.

Hey Aero, you gotta tell Him, you have actually been to Manitoba this summer:D

I have a funny feeling that this is just a 3 spd standard, as it is a re-badged Plymouth, and there are all original badges as far as I can tell and no fluid drive indication on any....and I haven't been under the car per say, it was about 1/2 " off the ground when I first saw it, and now I've blocked it up about a foot to swap wheels, but it's right beside a house and closer to a fence, I'll have to wait until I pull it out about 20 feet and get some serious air under it with the big floor jack.

The fellow told me he drove it some, then he left the plugs out and it got water in the bores???? not quite sure how that happened unless a: the hood was open for years which I doubt, or he hosed the open plug holes for some reason, alas, he says he tried with 2x4's to free it up, again, not sure what a 2x4 will do without the head off, but I think a newer drive line may be an option here.

anyone know how to remove the dowel pins that locate the rims on the brake drums, I did this on my 55 but that was over 5-6 years ago, and i fergets. I have newer rims to swap on and would prefer not to drill out the holes.

Cool Aero, I knew there was a larger "family" out there, and hope you enjoyed the Manitoba run......was it raining? If not I can tell you exactly which 3 days you were here. :D

Thanks for the info Fred, I'm a stickler for the little details.....The car most likely won't roll under it's own power for a while, but I'd love all the hood letters intact and better park lamp lenses.

email me with what you may have...mbmopar@hotmail.com

I used a chisel and a BFH on my wheel locating pins. Take the drums off the car first.

I'm kinda tempted to just take my 4 1/2 " grinder and cut off wheel to his house and be done with them...the speedo reads 95xxx or so if i recall, so they would be done anyways I'm guessing.

they will most likely be going to scrap anyways....although drilling the rims is tempting as well, as the pins do serve a purpose semi holding the wheel there...and I don't have alot of room to get by the side if the house / fence where it sits now.....hmmm....

Drill one hole in each of the wheels going on that side ?

I have one pr of ford steel 15's and one spr of mopar 15's, both pairs have smaller holes between each of the lug holes, so i could just open one up per wheel...

i pressure washed the original wheels and tires and will take them to the local tire shop and get their opinion, maybe have them strip the rubber off and check the beads.........will update

I sure am excited.....it does have it's place in ,line though, my truck is first, but I'll be looking for some odds and ends for this one in the mean time.....and doing little things.

I'd like to give it a good cleaning, it's supposed to warm up next week......i had the hot water on for the pressure washer today, the air temp just cooled the water off, so the result was negligible.

here's to sunny days !:)

Welcome aboard from Saskatchewan. I have a 1950 Dodge Special Deluxe as well, it is a 2 door version. It has been in my wife's family since new. It is in similar shape, it does not have the marker lights on the front and back like yours' does.

love the coupe.....the markers fore and aft on mine are tacky add ons, hate them really, not sure how much hacking was involved installing, lets hope just 2 screw holes per and one wire cavity.
