JIPJOBXX Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 Started to take my old Dodge out tonight and I noticed it would not accelerate like it should. It was kind of like running out fuel and hesitate and run up to full speed again. I have never had a car do this befor. I think it must be some dirt in the carburetor or something like that? It will idle and excelerate for a second or so and then just drop back to ideal and if I set the gas throttle it will just run up and down like a roller coaster. Any suggestion? Before I take the carb apart? Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted September 8, 2010 Author Report Posted September 8, 2010 Checked to see if gas was in the glass bowl and it was full and it has a new gas filter installed. Quote
greg g Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 when was the last time you checked your point gap and condition? Quote
Bobtjr(dale) Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 yep I'll bet it's your vacum advance or fuel pressure Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted September 8, 2010 Author Report Posted September 8, 2010 Well it might be the points as when I went to change the setting the screw that holds the hold the points in place was loose and the screw was stripped. So tomorrow I will install a new set of extra points I have and see what happens. This problem seems to have happen befor but never like this. So maybe that screw had become loose over time and just worked it way out and therefor letting the points kind of go where ever they wanted to be. More to come tomorrow. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 Hi, I think we all need to look at these points with the hot weather and the running of these cars that rubbing block has got to be effected. Greg was right on my problem. I have never readjusted my points when they began to wear I would just replace them. I also need to use a little grease on the block to smooth the wear. Now I adjusted it to 20 on my gauge when it comes to a worn set of points is that right? The car starts on the first two revolutions now as it did when the points were new. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted September 9, 2010 Author Report Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) I took the distributor out today and the attachment threaded hole for the points was shot!!!!!!!!! I tried to mickey mouse the hole up with using a sheet metal screw but there is a bearing race right under the area of that worn out threaded hole. So after looking at it and thinking how can I save this distributor and I came up with an idea:eek: I just repositioned the set screw that holds the point in place and taped another hole (8-32 treads per inch) and just finished with putting the distributor all back together. I adjusted the point while the distributor was on my work bench and well someday I will get another distributor and do this job right. But for now but it worked and that's what count. This may not be the trouble that I started with but at least I know the points are going to set in one position and not move. Edited September 9, 2010 by JIPJOBXX Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted September 10, 2010 Author Report Posted September 10, 2010 Well after playing the distributor for two days I finally got it installed and started up the car. It started up just fine but I still have a power problem. I can stump on the floor pedal and the engine will just take oft. But after a few seconds it just poops out and seems to be starving for gas. I decided to take my BVDX-3 carburetor apart but first I unhooked the gas line to carburetor to make sure I was getting enough fuel and sure enough it was. So I took the carburetor apart and notice some small pieces of rust or something in on of the jets so I cleaned that out and just cleaned up the whole carburetor for the 45Th time. I need a new carburetor repair kit because my old gasket is shot and I made up a new one but its not a great one but hope it will work. Will test the carburetor tomorrow and see if it was just a little rust got into the carburetor and did it deed. Oh yes I noticed with the new gas that it really leaves a residue inside the float area-kind of a white material. Does anyone here have a schematic drawing of my carburetor? I used the one from my mechanics manual and its not the best picture in the world. Thank Jon:D Quote

JIPJOBXX Posted September 10, 2010 Author Report Posted September 10, 2010 Thanks Greg but I need a one for a fluid drive transmission. Has a dash pot added to the carburetor so that when you come to a stop the engine will not stall. Quote
