lugnut123 Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 I have a b-3-c and I was wondering how hard it is to rebuild a 4 speed tranny? How much for a bearing kit? Is that tranny winey sound usually worn bearing or? Any where do they sale kits? Just looking at opions . thanks everyone. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 Is your trans the non-syncro version? If so they are whiney in general. Might not be anything wrong. Quote
rustyzman Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 Ed's right. If you have an unsynchronized unit it is built with straight spur gears and will have a natural whine, though the whine may worsen as the gears wear. A bad bearing is usually more of a groan or rumble. Make sure your whine is in the trans and not the rear end so you don't chase after the wrong stuff. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 A B-3 should have a syncro-mesh 4 speed. Look to see if the drain plug is angled down. Spur gear transmissions are whiney in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. When you go into 4th the whine goes away. If you have the syncro-mesh trans and it whines than I would suspect a bad gear or bearing. Does it whine in all gears or is it worse in certain gears? This would help identify the problem. Look through your local yellow pages and look for transmission shops that have been around for a long period of time. They can often find parts for these older transmissions. Merle Quote
grey beard Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 When you overhaul a truck transmission, you don't start with a kit. You pull it apart and inspect each part, then go to a bearing shop- like Bearings INC. -- and buy what you need,. Usually, bearing numbers are common across mfrs. lines, so a bearng number is a bearing number. Typically, bearings wear out only when oil levels have dropped dramitically and were run that way for a while. Be aware that cases can wear where rhe couner shafts fit, and the shafts that hold bearings can become gauled, as well. For this reason, you really must start out with a tear-down and visual ispectrion. Good Luck Quote

Noel, I know it might seem ridiculous but I have a really good transmission rebuilder. Ask for Fermin. Lara & Sons. 1623 Compton Ave Los Angeles, CA 90021 (213)749-9168. http://laraandsonsdifferentials.auto.officelive.com/default.aspx My only comment (and this would be true for any rebuild shop) Is that you save them the research and supply a full set of gaskets. They probably will reveive and ship (not sure it'll be worth it) Maybe if you crate it and ship via freight it might work out better. My 3-speed was $178 to completely rebuild. My kind of place: Let me know if I can help in any way, Hank Edited July 22, 2010 by HanksB3B Quote
lugnut123 Posted July 22, 2010 Author Report Posted July 22, 2010 I think I must have a syncro ed 4 speed. It shifts to easy to be a non. I haven't really got this old truck out on the road and ran it hard yet. I think I'll change the oil in the tranny and give it a go before I tear any thing apart. What do you think 80/90 or 85/140 gear oil for the tranny?? thanks everyone. Quote
HanksB3B Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 I like Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Lube. Hank Quote
lugnut123 Posted July 22, 2010 Author Report Posted July 22, 2010 I have a bucket of 80/90 in the tractor shed so I think i'll try it first.. Thanks Hank and everyone. Quote
