Powerhouse Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 How much is normal to drip out of the tube? On my old engine it didn't just drip as it ran. The new engine seems to be spewing oil out the tube when it revs... Any ideas...it leaves a puddle when idling? Maybe too much oil? Quote
randroid Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Powerhouse, Given the problem occurred in both the old and the new engine I would first ensure the oil filler breather isn't clogged. -Randy Quote

If you remove your engine oil fill cap with the engine running is there a lot of visible smoke? Have you done a compression check? Quote
Powerhouse Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 old engine didn't leak...maybe a few drips. New engine does...oil level is 3/4 full..now...it was full yesterday. It still has all that engine break in additive and engine break in grease in it. seems rather thick? No smoke...will do a compress check tonight. But it's a new rebuild. No other symptoms... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 I am not at home or near my book but is there supposed to be a baffle between the oil draft tube and the block..??? it is supposed to syphon the fumes without drawing true oil or heavy mists.. Quote
aero3113 Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Be aware of how deep your compression testor screws into the head. Make sure it will not go deeper than the spark plugs, you can damage your valves. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 New engine does...oil level is 3/4 full..now I dont understand 3/4 Full? Engine holds 5 quarts, 6 quarts with a filter. How much oil is in the engine? Quote

I remember seeing a post a while back where someone used a piece of a tin can to block part of the exit hole where the draft tube mounts. This allowed only air to exit and the oil would be blocked by the piece of tin. Quote

Powerhouse Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 I noticed when the draft tube is off you can see a pool of oil sitting level with the tube's mount port. Shouldn't that be draining back in? What is the oil flow path from there? Quote

How much oil is in the engine? on the dipstick the level was at full when first started engine. I ran it on the stand many times...without draft tube...and no oil came out like that. I put the correct amount of oil in... Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) And......this may sound like a stupid question......does your car have the correct oil dipstick? In other words......if you put in either the required 5 or 6 quarts, then check it immediately afterward, does it read at the "full" mark as it should. You may well have the right quantity of oil, but if the stick is incorrect, a person might think another quart is needed, causing an over-filling. Just making a wild guess. I had to make my own full mark on my present dipstick as it wasn't quite right. Hope you solve the mystery soon. For informaton to anyone interested, this shows different dipsticks used for Plymouths........ Edited July 14, 2010 by BobT-47P15 Quote
Powerhouse Posted July 14, 2010 Author Report Posted July 14, 2010 well...no more leaking...i guess there was too much oil with the added break in oil and grease. The dipstick I have is the later p15 style. I also have an early style with the curved top...same lengths. Quote
