KJ's Dodge Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 (edited) Since this was asked in one of my previous threads: "Sweet! How do you shift the rear end...and is that usually shifted with the tranny gears or just for special occasions?" I couldn't resist scanning and posting the little 7 page Eaton cartoon instruction brochure that was left in the glove box of my big rig, so here you all go. It is suppose to be a "Snap to operate." It is taking too long to load tonight, so I will post the final three pages tomorrow. Enjoy, KJ Edited June 15, 2010 by KJ's Dodge Adding the last pages of the brochure Quote
MBF Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Some of those vacuum units you almost had to be born on to shift smoothly-the air and electically operated units were a lot easier to use. I had a 39 Dodge ton and a half that had a lever shifted 2 speed-that was a hoot to drive. Mike Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) These Dodge vacumn shift rear axles are very fast and easy to use. Electric worm drive 12volt -later 1956 dodge truck shift motors are slower to shift the 2 speed rear end and grind a bit. The vacumn shift like on KJ's truck is a dream to shift. All my Dodges are either Timkin or Eaton vacumn shift 2 speeds and and I love the fast way they operate! The vacumn lines and control valve and diaphram of course all have to be operating correctly. Have driven them years. Bob Edited June 16, 2010 by Dodgeb4ya Quote

tysouthwick Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 My neighbor has a 46 2 ton and I was wondering can you go faster when you go in to the Higher gear Quote
wallytoo Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 My neighbor has a 46 2 ton and I was wondering can you go faster when you go in to the Higher gear uh, yes, for a given gear. not a lot faster, but mine will go about 15 mph faster in 4th high vs. 4th low. wally Quote
tysouthwick Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 Sorry what I meant to say is that my neighbor has a eaton 2 speed rear end on his truck Quote
KJ's Dodge Posted June 21, 2010 Author Report Posted June 21, 2010 High gear is for speed. Low is for climbing a hill or starting out with a load. So, yes you have taller gears in high, thus faster MPH at the same RPM. KJ Quote
John-T-53 Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 That's some cool stuff. Thanks for posting the information! Quote
wallytoo Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 Sorry what I meant to say is that my neighbor has a eaton 2 speed rear end on his truck and my answer remains the same. the truck can travel at a slightly higher speed for a given gear in high range vs low range. Quote
