Robert Horne Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 Pulled the hubs off the 49 Dodge today. It was very easy with the large hub puller I borrowed off my cousin. Rebuilt the wheel cylinders that were not too bad. Now off to the front. Quote
randroid Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 Robert, Glad it went easy for you; many in this forum have not been so fortunate. When I did mine six years ago I gave the spline a light application of anti-seize to hedge against the next time but I think that was more to make me feel good rather than to actually accomplish anything. -Randy Quote

A couple of those lug bolts look new so perhaps the drum has been off before you got to it . Quote

aero3113 Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 That's great!! It took me through hell to get my left rear drum off. Read these two posts to get a feel of what I went through:mad: http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=17863 http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=17960 Quote

A couple of those lug bolts look new so perhaps the drum has been off before you got to it . I have been using this mallet for 40 years, nice and heavy. This is a very old heavy duty hub puller. I have never seen one this big. My gear pullers would not make a budge all week on the hub. Passenger side came off easy, looks to have been off not too long ago with newer wheel cylinder parts, but the driver side has been on for a very long time. Front left was leaking, and needs a new hose, that I have in my box of parts, and found 2 pair of good shoes in my parts collection, what good luck. I never did get the hub off my 38 in the last 20 years. Maybe I will try tomorrow. Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 this is unbelievable! i'm glad that one time i can read a thread about rear brake drums without all the violence, frustration and hate they normally contain:rolleyes: i've been down that road, so i know what it's worth, congratulations! Quote
ptwothree Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 When I pulled my rear drums, I borrowed one from the local high school. It is an old Snap On. It has a slide hammer arrangement instead of the hit and swear type that is more common. And does it work nice!! Just a couple of pops and it's done!! Cost $500+ when new but probably less on ebay now. Wish i'd took some pics.. Quote

I tried the puller on my 38 Plymouth this morning, would not budge. The Plymouth hub was starting to bend, so I backed off, and let it go. I tried to remove the hubs 20 years ago, but ended up grinding off the rivets. The Plymouth will be a good winter task............ Quote
