aztecgold Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Hi everybody! Just bought a 41 Plymouth club coupe. Its been sitting in dry storage since 1980. According to the last owner, it had a rod knock/noise coming from the engine when it was last driven 30 years ago. It was still a runner back then, so nothings sticking through the side of the block. What is the best way to get this thing moving under its own power again? I'm not ready to rebuild it yet, since I need to do more research, but I want to get it moveable under its own power again. So far the only things missing are the battery and the rotor. I have the carb disassembled and in a dip tank now. I'm waiting for the rebuild kit I just ordered from a local carb shop. WD has been shot down all six plug holes. There's no water in the oil and the oil is clean. Any recommendations? How about specialty suppliers of parts. The brakes need to be rebuilt too, the MC is toast. Thanks. Quote
aero3113 Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Welcome! Nice car. Re-post this thread on the car forum you will get a lot more replies/feedback. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2 Quote
LuckyDevil Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Fuel and spark! And Voila. If it was sitting that long, I would check the fuel tank and lines for crud before anything else. Looks like a great start though. And your brake cylinder and master cylinder rebuild kits are available at your local NAPA store. Pretty cheap too, I might add. Quote
PatS.... Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Welcome! Mine sat for 30 yrs too. I would pull the head and pan. The head to see if it's all rusted inside, and the pan to check for critters and to clean it up. My oil pan had cotton from behind the headliner on the oil pick-up and several mouse carcasses in the pan. Under the head was a broken valve and mucho rust. If all looks good and the engine turns by hand, put some oil on the top of the pistons, new head gasket, oil pan gasket, plugs, points, distributor cap and rotor, condensor and plug wires and give it a whirl. aztecgold Posted April 28, 2010 Author Report Posted April 28, 2010 Thanks for the replies everybody. I went to the local Napa and all they had was an oil filter for the car, but the other stuff can be ordered. My neighbor is a store manager of one of the Napa stores, so I'm going to see if he'll bring home some of his books for me to check for the right parts. Quote

That looks like a good vehicle and it sounds like you are approaching it correctly. Congratulations! I don't have very much cross reference information for the 1941 models but feel free to see if anything I have determined is useful for you: http://www.ply33.com/Parts/numeric When you find the parts you need, I sure would like to add them to my database. brian hood Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 I got a 52 Desoto that had been sitting since the 80's. All I did was soak the cyl in sea foam and turn them over about every two days for a week. I made sure to get all oil out before I tried to put the plugs back in. I put a guage on the oil circut and made sure that I prime it (you will see oil pressure). New plugs and points were next. finally, I poured a little gas in the carb and it ran! I did put a fuel cell in the trunk and now it cranks and runs great. 1 Quote
