The input shaft is not unique to the R10 overdrive. It is the same one used in the regular transmission. Check with Len Dawson, Mitchell's, Collector's Auto Supply, etc.

There are two types of input shafts... for two different types of synchros.

The pin type, and the strut type. You will need to determine which one you have, before ordering another.

Pete,

Thanks for catching my error. You are correct.

No error on your part Jim, it is my understanding that both types of input shaft were used in both the standard 3 spd and the 3 spd with OD.

I had planned to use the input shaft from my '50 3 spd in my '55 3 spd with OD, but found that the synchros didn't match.... had to find another shaft to match the later transmission.

Mike, The front case should be stamped "PT" and the date next to the shift cover if it's a pin type trans. Pin types can wear out syncro's pretty bad and syncro gear teeth too. Parts can be hard to get for them .Your mechanic should be able to tell you what type you have. Your buddy Frank might have one.

Low oil, bad oil ,banging shifts when you are 16, drunk and not using the clutch, bad /loose input shaft bearing, mainshaft output nut loose at brake drum, weak detent springs in shift cover and or high mileage!

Lack or excess of input, input out of parameters, insufficient output relative to input.

Lack of lubricant, improper lubricant, corrosion.

Where did the man say it was in rough shape? Are the splines desplining, is the retainer bearing failing to retain? Is it bent? Are the key ways worn, are the bearing races gaulled? Is the pilot portion pitted?

Rough shape is such a broad brush. One would also wonder if it has roughed up any thing else?

Probably the syncro teeth points are rounded off the input shaft-seen it many times-maybe mikes issue? And if so he'll need some more parts too.
