B1B Keven Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 I hate this. I don't know what I did, other than add some shims to the cap plate, but now I have the best steering I've ever had! Turns nice and returns to center after going around a corner. Now I need to set my toe adjustment. Quote

gramps1951 Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 I have some question to this old thread I printed out the cover gasket and the shims what did you use for the shims and gasket. and if removeing the shims tightens the play why do we need more shims? the shaft that is on the bottom of the steering box that gos to the pitman arm isn't there a seal there that is where mine leaked from. and I am still not sure where to find the shims. is it right under the cover. hopeing to do this in the truck the play in the box is not too bad but I have no more adjustment with the adjusting screw so I guess one shim removed might do the trick. and I want to thank the person that made up the patterns for the gasket cover and shims. neil Quote
HanksB3B Posted May 27, 2013 Author Report Posted May 27, 2013 I'm not sure about the Pitman arm shaft seal, I didn't have to go there. I used a micrometer and found that their were two thicknesses to the original shims. I don't remember exactly what they were but we're talking "paper-thin" here. I would think a good source would be a drafting store and some good quality vellum. What amazed me was that a measurement of .002 on a truck as rough and tough as ours could actually make a difference in the way the steering operated. Good luck and happy be be of help, Hank Quote
JBNeal Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) The pitman arm seal is National 240151, the dust seal can be soaked in diesel for a few days then squeezed out & dried then soaked in light oil Edited May 24, 2014 by JBNeal Quote
