i know that there is already probably a thread like this somewhere, but i have a specific question. what size radial tire do most people put on these days? i think i was 215-80-16 or something like that. i have 6.50-16 right now. the other thing, what do you do for the whole tube/tubeless thing with these newer tires? can our rims be made tubeless? or do we need tubes for these newer tires, too?

On my car, the tires were G78-15 and they crossed over to 205/75/15 radials using the conversion table, (I think it was on Coker's site.) I bought new 2 piece valve stems fom a tire repair wholesaler. They were oblong shaped on the stem part to fill the oblong hole in the rim. I cleaned the rim and installed and they hold good air pressure.

I found a Light Truck Radial (LT215/85/16 )that worked just fine on the stock rims as long as I used the two piece valve stem. I was able to run tubless and the ride is great compared to the 6 ply tires that I took off. They are a little tall so the speedo is off by 10mph

The two piece metal valve stem is one of the keys to keeping them tubeless because they fill the oval hole on the rim. There is a picture of them under Search --special valves

Found the picture in the tubless tire thread......

If your rims aren't painted yet, it's a simple job to weld up the oval hole and redrill a round hole in a different location. I also use metal valve stems. I run p225 75r 15's on my '38 dodge pu and p215 75r 15's on my '36 chrysler with good results...stock drivetrain on both.

My speedo is about 15 m p h off............if I'm doing 35 mph, the speedo

needle reads 50. Not sure why as I have what should be an original

P15 trans and the 670-15 bias ply tires. The car came out with 16"

tires, but I don't think going to 15s should make that much difference.

So, don't know what's the real problem.

I have two or three more speedos I'll probably try when it gets

warmer.....maybe one will be better. I think the gear where the

cable goes into the trans can be changed, but I now can't recall

the number of teeth needed, or where to buy such a gear.

I believe the subject was discussed in previous threads.
