jmooner3
Will the front clip from my 49 1/2 ton fit the 50 1 ton? The 1 ton is certainly bigger, bigger wheels, etc. But the only sheet metal I have is from my 49 1/2 ton... I need to get the brakes working, electrical, and a laundry list of other stuff but If the sheet metal will fit that is a step in the right direction... JBNeal
The 1 ton has larger hubs that push the wheels away from the frame, but the front axle and steering mechanism are identical to that in the 1/2 ton. The front clips for 1/2, 3/4 & 1 ton are interchangeable. Edited February 27, 2010 by JBNeal poor grammar
townwagon
All of the 1948-50 front sheet metal, fenders, nose, etc will fit 1/2 ton to 1 ton trucks. At 1 1/2 ton a lot changes, but that does not apply to your trucks. As I said before I would just swap the front sheet metal off your 1/2 ton onto the 1 ton, build a runner, and while you are using the 1 ton you can fix up the 1/2 ton. With some time and effort you could have a nice runner of a 1/2 ton, and in the meantime you can find another front clip for it. If you can find a correct 9' bed for the 1 ton you could have the start of a fleet of pickups, just needing a 48-50 3/4 ton to complete the collection. Good luck! jmooner3
Thanks guys... Eric - I'm heading down the path you suggested, get the 50 running and tinker on the 49. My boy and I have the engine running on the 50, I rigged an 87 camero radiator from the junkyard so it can idle without overheating...Funny looking and fun as heck...we'll be addressing brakes next, wiring etc. Any leads on front sheet metal in the North east / New England area...? Does anyone know how the gears are packed on a speed column shift? I think it's a 3 speed. Reverse is up and away towards the front. I'm not sure if 1st is up and back or up and front "under" reverse...
Young Ed
1st in under reverse. Then 2nd is over and up and 3rd over and down
townwagon
Another parts truck. Maybe watch Craig's List 3-4 states around around you? I bet in the next 6 months something will pop up, and with a parts truck you might get a lot of other bits you need. Or just keep asking on this forum every couple months, someone in your area might stop by and have some spare bits behind their garage they will sell. Sounds like a good route to go, this will get you on the road much faster I think. Having an actual truck to drive is a great help in motivating work on another truck. Plus you can use it for parts runs! Good luck, Eric
