JIPJOBXX Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Just trying to make up my mine weather to buy a pickup truck (1981) with a 460 engine it. The heater core is not hooked up and so I suppose it leaks. Its a great deal for 900 dollars but it does have a few issues? It runs like a race horse but gas mileage stinks. Anyway just wonder what would be involved with replace the old heater unit. :cool:Jon F-250 Newer engine New Brakes, new exhaust plus complete tune up and oh yes it a four wheel drive. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 I had to have the heater core replaced in my 97 F-150. I was on the road when it failed. Cost around 4 bills and change. Quote
Adam H P15 D30 Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Hello, Lurker here with first post. Those heater cores are easy as I remember. I THINK you just need to pull the glove box out. At least that was the way I did it on my 86. Took about an hour. Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Did one in a 94 ford Taurus wagon...took 2 days...11 hours...and had to remove dash, wiring, seats, etc.....I did it for $300 but cheapest shop was $1000!! So sorry I can't help but it has to be easier then what I did....Good luck. Quote
blueskies Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Don't know about the Furds, but I did the heater core in my '86 Chevy Van based motorhome. It was an un-godly nightmare... I had to gut the entire interior to remove the dash just to get to the heater core... I wouldn't do it again. Pete Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 According to my 1981 Motor's Parts and Time Guide, book time is 1.8 hours with AC, and 1.6 without. Shouldn't be too bad a job. Quote
clay diggs Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 I have a 1981 f150 with a 302.Replacing the heater core in it was a easy job. Quote
PatS.... Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 90% of the time a heater core replacement is a bear of a job. I remember my 65 Pontiac Cattleliner, with AC...the darn fender had to be loosened off! I'm looking at the same job in a Dodge Caravan. Looks like it will get ugly. ;( Good luck with the F*rd!! Quote
