DanOlson Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Anyone know what the original exhaust pipe to manifold connection looked like? Did the exhaust pipe have a flat flange or did it go up into the manifold a bit? Replacing the exhaust gasket is typically an annual event for me. Dan Olson Quote
Young Ed Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Dan you want a welded flange with a portion of exhaust pipe going into the manifold. The type where they mushroom the pipe into the flange is a poor deal. Quote
grey beard Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Dan, The original connection was just a flat flange mated to the manifold with a single asbestos gasket. There are several ways whereby this arrangement may be improved - using a donut gasket, running a piece of pipe up inside the manifold, etc. Some military applications used longer bolts with springs at this connection for - my guess only - protection of the manifold if something was high-centered on the pipe. My own exhaust is still stock, but was renewed at the local pipe shop - right back to the rear bumper. I used the largest, quietest muffler they could make fit. Now it is just as quiet as a MoPar automobile - loudest thing on the whole truck is the Carter electric fuel pump. Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 A big pic to see which type. Quote
DanOlson Posted January 21, 2010 Author Report Posted January 21, 2010 Thanks guys. I understand now why mine is prone to leaking. I'm going to try and coordinate getting the exhaust renewed with 'Mopars in the Park'. June 5-6. Dan Quote
Young Ed Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Dan if you can remove your front pipe your self and have a new one made it shouldn't be too bad. I did that for my 46 when I switched manifolds and it wasn't too bad. Quote
