47heaven Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Ready to take the car in today for paint, but at a standstill here trying to remove the stainless moulding from the windshield, and my manual doesn't explain how. It just tells you to remove it. I tried to pry it a little, but I'm afraid of kinking it. What's the proceedure here? Hopefully someone can answer this ASAP. Thanks! Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 I've never removed my windshield trim on the P15. I have removed the trim on other cars though. Whenever I remove stainless trim from a car I use a Windshield Trim removal tool. It's a small hand tool that has flat steel with a rounded end. On the end it has little hooks cut into the flat steel. You run that along the underside of your trim until you come to a clip (if there is one). Then you gently pry up on the trim to release it from the clip. Works great for side trim too. I also used it to remove the rubber door sills without damaging those. It will also remove the rubber that is glued to car around the windows. Great little tool to have. Only cost a coupe bucks at any auto parts store. Just look or ask for a Windshield removal tool. 47heaven Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Thanks, Norm. I went ahead and took it out carefully by hand, (probably while you were typing your message) and though it didn't kink, it tweaked some. So I'm going to have to get it straightened. If not, do you or anyone else know where there's a place that sells new stainless moulding for these windshields? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Darin, If you just tweaked the stainless a little, you should be able to tweak it back as long as it's not kinked. Or, there are places that will restore your old stainless parts. Don't know who they are off hand, but they would be listed in someplace like Hemmings Motor News, or possibly Old Cars Weekly. Someone else on the board may know someone too. As far as buying new stainless, you'd have to settle for good used probably. Nobody is making those. I have some windshield trim on ebay right now. However it's for a D24 and won't fit your P15. Quote

Thanks![/quote'] I believe the stainless is glued to the rubber gasket holding the glass in place. I removed mine by cutting the gasket. Since I was replacing the glass and the window gasket it wasn't a problem. I don't know how to remove the stainless with out hurting the rubber window gasket. Chet... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 They sure seem like they are glued after sitting in the sun for umpteem years. I carefully removed mine after breaking the seal between the stainless and the rubber with a dull putty knife..and even then it is still a trip getting it out... Quote
Frank M. Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 Dont feel bad about having trouble with P-15 windshields. They had a gasket that was unique to Plymouths. Chry. Dodge and De Soto used a diff. one. The gasket has two opposing slots. One for the body pinch weld, and the other for the glass . The factory put a sealer in both the slots. To install--the gasket goes on the glass, Both sides of course, and gets held against the windshield frame from the inside. Then the lip on the gasket gets lifted over the body pinch weld. The manual suggests a cord, which is a pretty good method. Glass installers have a hook that rolls it over. The inside windshield trim ring holds the whole thing from the back side, and the remaining two stainless mouldings go into the outer slot. Its not a easy job for a novice, and I dreaded the few I had to do. You have to kinda collapes the outer mouldings a little to get them in on the outer edges first. A lotta care cause they can kink. Take your time---study it, and use a lotta rubber lube or liquid dishwashing soap. The center outer and inner bars go on last. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 As mentioned before. One of these little handy tools will get the rubber seal and trim loose from the car. $4.99 at JC Whitney and they are in local parts stores too. I've had one for years only mine has a larger end and nicer handle. http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2011202/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2011202/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=windshield Quote
