jd52cranbrook Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 (edited) I do not have the boot as yet, it's on its way. But here it is in the car. Edited March 7, 2010 by jd52cranbrook Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Good to hear you are finally on the road. I like the idea of the close ratio. If I recall I did not have an issue with the length of the front bearing retainer on my NWC T-5. But I did have an issue with the diameter of the front bearing retainer with the "fit" to the throw out bearing sleeve. I had to remove some metal from the bearing retainer outer surface and remove some material from the inner sleeve. I also had to modify my floor pan. Not sure of the difference between my 48 and your 52 but I had to raise the hump a couple of inches. I also had to adjust for clearance issues between the cross member and the front of the transmission. I hope you enjoy your T-5 as much as I enjoy mine. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I just switched the front bearing retainers between my 2 nwc t5s in order to get the short one on the trans I intend to use. The truck throwout bearing is much larger so the kit has a bushing to reduce the inner part of the dodge bearing and holder down to the t5. Quote
BeBop138 Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 JD, I used a large pipe cutter on my bearing retainer to short it up. The S-10 retainers are longer, my 84 Camaro T-5 has a shorter retainer. Also here is a pic of my floor......Lee:D Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted March 8, 2010 Author Report Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) I thought about cutting it as you did Lee. But I was mentioning it to Earl and he offered to send me one to swap with at no charge so I took him up on it. That, and I didn't want to be cutting into a seal or something. Then I thought about cutting the end off the throw out bearing. Don, I have to raise my floor about two inches also. I think I will make it flat for a base for a console later. My original floor board does not unbolt like yours, but not it will. Might come in handy later. On my parking brake, I need to fab a cup to hold the drive shaft like the rear end did. I first thought the bolts would keep the drive shaft centered, but was talked out of that. Any input on that would be appreciated. I will put the brake disc on a lath and turn down a recess cup for the differential side, and fab some kind of cup for the drive shaft side. Turning out to be a lot of work even the built transmission, but it was pretty awesome going through the gears, staying right up with traffic. Next step,, MORE POWER, ,,lol Oh yeah,, BeBop, this is a Mustang WC T-5 front and gears with a S-10 tail housing. I am miffed at why the sizes differ with the same part number. jd52cranbrook Posted March 8, 2010 Author Report Posted March 8, 2010 Pretty good match, the shifter fits good on it. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Looks very good. Is the shifter "throw" shorter on your transmission than what is on a NWC transmission? On my NWC T-5 the "throw" is somewhat long but does not hit the seat or dash. I find it very comfortable having driven it for several years. But your short shifter lever looks very good. Can you post a picture showing where the shifter lever sits? Here is my shifter lever in (I think) neutral as this picture was taken several years back. Guess I need to take pictures with the lever in every gear. I will do so when I return home. Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted March 14, 2010 Author Report Posted March 14, 2010 I took some pics, but the video shows it better. It's a short throw. Keep in mind the carpet is not down firm as yet. I still need to put in the sheet metal. I put about 100 miles on it yesterday, ran great. And quiet considering the carpet was the only thing between the transmission and me.. Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted March 14, 2010 Author Report Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) I am very happy with it. And I really lucked out on finding a great builder who helped me through any issues whatsoever with it. Earl and I exchanged email and several phone calls. He sent me the shorter shoulder bearing retainer immediately after seeing I needed it. If anyone wants to go the route I did I would contact him. The builder of the tranny was Earl Johnson at; hjhnracing@msn.com (512)809-5923 Now onto the sheet metal cover and Parking brake, which is close... More to come. Here was the differnce in bearing retainer shoulders,, same part number too.. Edited March 14, 2010 by jd52cranbrook Quote
