1951 Dodge Woodie

I received an email the other day from the relatives of the late John Winter who owned a 1951 Dodge Woody. They are looking to sell it and would like it to go to someone who appreciates the value of a Dodge Pilothouse woody. I've attached an email from them and if anyone is interested you can contact them directly. Understand that they have already had it appraised, so they have a pretty good understanding of what it's worth.

Actually those were his personal photos, which he took because his Dodge was featured in a book called "American Woodys." He purchased it used when he was in his early 20's, and restored it himself, including all of the woodwork. It's a very impressive vehicle. About six months ago he had the body lifted and put on the frame/drivetrain of a mid-80s Dodge pickup with a 318(?) ci v8 and auto transmission. He was planning on selling the Woody in that form, with the original frame/engine/tranny/wheels included as part of the sale, in case the new owner wants to change it back to original form. I know he posted an ad or two on Ebay, Hemmings, and The National Woody Club (of which he was a member) so someone probably found that photo from one of those ads.

It currently needs a small amount of work (he began disassembling the engine to paint/detail it days before he passed). But rest assured, we will get it back running and in selling condition. It has been appraised by a professional collectible car appraiser and it has collectible car insurance on it.

John was also in the process of building a matching trailer made from the bed of a 1951 Dodge pickup, which we'd be happy to include in the sale for free... but it is in the VERY beginning stages of building (rusty bed, disassembled trailer frame, etc.)

I myself have a classic 1965 Mustang in showroom condition (that was handed down to my by my grandparents who purchased it new in 1964), so I know the love and value these old cars inspire. We do want it to go to someone who will appreciate all the hard work John put into it. I will be happy to provide detailed photos (both now and before restoration) and information (as much as I can find) of the Woody to any interested people.

Hi, Bob and thank you for posting for me. This is Graeme, who emailed you the information above. I began researching Pilot House vehicles and came across this site after I emailed you that information. Your help has been very much appreciated.

To everyone: Please contact me directly if you are interested in this beautiful Woody. I have an online photo album of it's history, up until this past weekend. I plan on getting it to a local custom car shop (who did the body transfer) this month so we can get the repairs started and this beauty back on the road.

While John did have it appraised and we know it's worth, we do understand it is not perfect, and we are open to offers within reason. I am happy to answer any and all questions.

Unfortunately, the matching trailer John was building is no longer available. However, the original frame/engine/drivetrain/wheels, etc is still going to be part of the final sale.

Thanks everyone... we truly do want this to go to someone who will appreciate it. It is unfortunate that we can't keep it, but we don't have the space to keep such a vehicle.

We are not trying to "make money" on this vehicle, but we don't want to just give it away, either. John put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this old wagon. It does need some work, as the body transfer small details weren't finished. We are willing to lower the price because of such details, especially if anyone interested is willing to take the Woody "as is." If not, we're going to have her fixed up as best we can, and sell at a higher (closer to appraisal value) price.
