maine48ply Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 I will be trying to paint over chrome very shortly. My bumpers are extrememly worn and pitted. I am in the process of sanding and spreading a fine layer of metal glaze, getting ready to prime and paint. I can't afford to rechrome. I'll let you know. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 Hey Bill, on my street rod all of the chrome is painted. I think you have to really coat it with primer. re you sure you want those wheels on the car:)some nice boyds would look great. I am saving for some torque thrust II I can't wait. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 Bill, If I was going to paint the chrome wheels, I'd sandblast them first to get the chrome off them. But.........why paint them? If you want to stay with Vintique wheels, just buy a new set of primed ones. Then just paint them whatever color you want. Then sell the chrome ones to at least break even. You can use the same center caps on the primed steel Vintique wheel as you have on the chrome wheel. Quote
Captain Neon Posted November 25, 2009 Report Posted November 25, 2009 I think your best bet is to get a set of steel wheels, paint those red, and then sell your chrome rims on eBay and pocket the difference to buy more stuff for your car. Quote

You need to dull the chrome by wet sanding with 600 grit sand paper. As long as it's dull, the paint will stick with no problem. Quote
claybill Posted November 25, 2009 Author Report Posted November 25, 2009 the red wheels in the pic....are what i have put on..stock rims painted...but the caps dont fit...i need baby moons 9-1/2 in. the chrome wheels came with the rod wen i bought it last month. i suppose the best thing is to order new steel wheels primed, then paint them...and sell the chrome ones...they have great tires too..! claybill...............i like the WWW red rim /look. it wont be that easy for me to sell the chromies..dont do ebay.... Don Coatney Posted November 25, 2009 Report Posted November 25, 2009 I paid around fifty bucks each for my Wheel Vintique chrome rims about 4-5 years ago. Has the price gone up that much? I once painted my hubs red but I did not like it. I like the gold better. Quote
claybill Posted November 25, 2009 Author Report Posted November 25, 2009 don...the price has gone up a bit and also includes the hubcaps. my chrome wheels came with the car..i didnt buy them...but i have a set of painted stock rims i painted with the WWW on the car now...i like it! bill thanks for the color comment. Bill, You could probably sell the chrome wheels on Craigs List. If you don't want to mess with that, just list them here in the parts section. There is one other possibility though for the chrome wheels. How would you feel about picking up a set of center bullets (like the old time Cadillac centers). You can buy just the center bullets from places like Speedway, etc. I'm like you though on chrome wheels. Don't mind them on a car that doesn't belong to me, but..........they really aren't retro. I like the painted wheel and a full hubcap, or the baby moons with trim rings too for our cars. Quote
dezeldoc Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 (edited) bill, i got my wheel vintiques painted centers from summit for 65.00 a piece, shipping for all 4 was 11.00! painting over chrome is no problem, sand them down with some 80 grit and use some self etching primer on them, then a light coat of primer and paint. keep the paint as thin as possible. WatchingWolf Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 great topic, two of my rims developed peeling near the center and while the outer ring is still okay I thought I may have to demote them to trailer tires and buy new, now I'll just paint the centers body color and fake up baby moons with trim rings! Love that look dezeldoc! Quote
