Merle Coggins Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I've been looking at king pin kits and notice different types of bushings and bearings avaialble. Some are listed with Metal Bushings and some with Nylon Bushings. And some are listed with Washer Bearings and some with Ball Bearings. Which is better? I would think I'd rather have metal bushings with ball bearings, but why are the others offered? Are they just as good or better? They the others aren't always cheaper. Merle Quote
Jim Roach Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Hi Merle, The set I got has brass bushings and ball bearings, but they also have a bearing washer that is inserted under the bearing to carry the load. The brass bushings are also slotted inside to accept the grease and allow it to spread in and around the shaft. Very high quality. Got it on EBay for about $25. I have seen them for a lot more ($80+)but keep your eyes open. Jim Roach Quote
oldmopar Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Not sure when the nylon bushing came out but around 59-60 there was a service bulletin that had recommended replacing the nylon with metal ones; so I would stay away from the nylon if at all possible. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I would stay away from the nylon if at all possible. I agree with that. Nylon or UHMW bushings have there place but I dont think king pin bushings is a place where they should be used. When I first assembled my engine transmission I bought a new throw out bearing. It had a nylon bushing. I failed within a very few hundred miles. I replaced it with a NOS brass bushed bearing. Quote
Olddaddy Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 You can take your king pins and old bushings to any good bearing house and get replacements. The bronze bushings wear on the inside, king pin side so the od is almost always still original. The king pin is the correct id, less a few thousandths for play. Welsh plugs are available at Napa or the bearing house. The bearings, if they are balls are usually good and can be shimmed. Quote
carl b51 Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Merle all these Gentlemen have good advice I got my Kingpin kit from Napa with brass bushings and the ball bearings and they work great don't do the UHMW bushings you won't like it. Just my opinion Carl Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 31, 2009 Author Report Posted October 31, 2009 Thanks guys, That's pretty much what I thought, but I figured I'd check with the throbing brain of information for confirmation. Merle Quote
