Skrambler Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 I have found myself in need of a new exhaust system for my 1941 P-12. I know that many of you have found yourselves in the same boat. Can you give me some tips? Some things to stay away from? Go with a typical metal pipe? Or, should I go with stainless? Do these systems come with mufflers and hangers? Do they all "fit" as they should? As you can tell, I am wide open for your recommendations, experiences, and suggestions. Thanks for your input! Quote
greg g Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Just go to a exhaust shop and heve them bend up a system using 2 inch pipe and a suitable muffler. If you have most of your system they can use it as a template to bend the new stuff. Mine was done 6 years ago and with only summer driving it has yet to begine to show rust. Quote
alan32433 Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I just bought a stainless system for my 48 Desoto. I shopped around and bought from Kepich Exhaust, they had the best price. They duplicate the originals, including a muffler if you need it. I chose stainless because these old cars sitting around most of their life have a tendency to rust out, plus they look better. Kepich had aluminized systems for half the cost of stainless. Stainless exhaust and tail pipe cost me $185, I believe shipping was $20. I didnt need a mufffler. You can do a google search for Kepich, their prices are online. One other thing, the tail pipe came in two pieces for ease of installation. Everything fit perfect too. Quote
grey beard Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I had a completely new aluminized system installed - parts and labor - for $114.00. They could have done it in stainless for me, but did not have an appropriate muffler to match, or I would have gone that route. Now, in hind sight, I would go to NAPA and buy a new lifetime guaranteed muffler from them, and then take it to my exhaust man. The muffler is the point that most likely will go on our antiques that are not driven very often. Whatever you decide to go with, avoid short start-ups and short runs, especially in cold weather. When my engine is started, it will run for a minimum of thirty minutes, so that any accumulated condensation will be well and truly evapaorated out. I remember seeing a shop technician cut off a shot muffler from an old lady's car, back when I was a service manager. He got more than a quart of water out of the poor thing - she never left town, just drove locally. That'sjust the sort of thing none of us want in an older vehicle that we are teying to keep alive a little longer. JMHO:) Good Luck Quote

Alan32433, I read your post and decided to check their web page out. After looking at their prices I gave them a call and ordered the pipes that I needed for my 51 Hudson. Exhaust shops around here are expensive so I went to S.C. several years ago for the system on the 47 P-15 I used to have. Really a great deal on the pipes and they will ship Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for that info. Richie. Quote

P-12 Tommy Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I had a local mom and pop exhaust place do mine about 8 months ago.. They had a guy that has 40 years experience bending pipe. Made the whole system in about 2 hours. Aluminumized and runs very quiet. $240.00. Just an example. Tom Quote
