Dodgeb4ya Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Curious to see what some of you guys have done with your left over junk MoPar parts. I made my mailbox out of a couple 1946-52 Plymouth/Chrysler axle housings used as the upright to hold both the newspaper box and on top of course the mailbox encased in a vandal proof enclosure. Anyone else done some old MoPar artwork? Bob Quote
oldmopar Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I like your mail box creative thinking and I would guess no one has one like it. Mail box smashing has seem to have died down the past few years. But a few years back I had a basically unbrakable mail box made out of some tough plastic type material. The mail box breakers evidentially got tired of there bat bouncing off it so the but a cable on it and pulled it out and dragged it down the block. I had to give them some credit they faced a change and found a way to solve it. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 They seem to beat up on mailboxes in our neighborhood from time to time. Whacked ours, along with others, a few months ago. I was able to straighten it back out, put small bolts in the hinges to replace the rivets, and still use it. Some were damaged worse. Some folks have installed what you described. Will see if the vandals go to any extra trouble to mess them up next time. Quote

Dug the appropriate size hole according to the instructions then improved upon it. The idea was to stick the post into the ground 18 inches then fill with concrete, just the hole..about the size of a coffee can in diameter. My hole was the diameter of a home depot bucket wth rebar sticking up from the bottam of the hole all the way to the top of the post then it was filled with concrete also:eek:. Then I put one of those steel plate mailboxes bolted to the post! I think it was about 2 weeks later, it was too tempting I guess, we came back from the VFW and they had come back....there was paint on the side of the mailbox and broken glass in the street. The only conclusion that was in my head was as they drove by and took a swing at it, the bat hit the mailbox bounced off and took out their window glass on the rear door! Cleaned up the glass and was happy. Edited September 7, 2009 by FRANKIE47 Quote
Troganin Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Nice work there Frankie. On my street the mailboxes are on the houses so I don’t get to have such fun. But there was a guy in the area, I believe it was last year or so, that kept having the plow truck knocking down his mailbox. He rented a bobcat and dug a 4 or 5 foot hole to put a decent sized I beam into. The next time the plow came by and hit it the mailbox it tore the side boom off the truck. Last I heard of it he was fighting erie county to not have to pay for repairing the truck. Quote
