Jim , I hope to do the same thing, I hope to get a T5 soon, and do the swap later.

Getting a T 5 from a 80s S 10 is probably the way to go.

Let me know how this works out for you, do you plan to go the dry clutch route, I already have a 3 spd and dry clutch in my 47 Chrysler...........Fred

Jim,

Please accept my thanks for sharing this information. It will be very helpful to me. Like others on this forum, I hope to do the swap in my Pilothouse truck. The only info missing from the chart is which units use an electronic speedo and which were still mechanical - as well as all the shifter differences. I have looked at some T5'a that have shift linkage way past the back of the tail shaft - a tough one to modify.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Again, thanks

If you want to use a T5 with a bench seat then you have to use a S10 T5 as AFAIK these are the only ones with a shifter mounted in the forward postion, all the other T5 are from cars that have bucket seats and therefore have the shifter on the rear of the gearbox extension housing, also I think a rough rule of thumb re the speedo drive is that Non-World Class T5 use a mechanical speedo drive, World Class T5's use an electronic speed drive......but don't quote me.....lol........also there some XLNT posts on the HAMB board regarding the various T5's, worth a look........andyd

Non World Class T-5's have the shifter mounted at the front of the tailstock. World Class T-5,s have the shifter mounted at the rear of the tailstock. However it is possible to swap tailstocks between WC and NWC. If you make this swap the speedometer gear from the NWC will be used. I believe most NWC T-5's do not have electroinic speedometers. The advantage of WC T-5's is a better overall gear ratio (IE no creeper first gear). However I have a NWC transmission in my car and I find the lower ratio first gear works well. I can drive in first gear on leval ground with the engine at idle without feathering the clutch.

I plan on using a dry clutch......I am supprised at how hard it is for me to find a T5, not that I am in a rush or anything, the fluid drive seems to work good and I have alot of otherthings to do before I start into a job like that.Worst thing is I had a T5 that I kept from my 87 S10 but I sold it to the guy I bought the Chrysler from:eek:....if I had only found this forum before I sold it to him.

On the S-10 trannys 88 and older is your best bet for mechanical speedo---conversion for the electric to mechanical is spendy---still, one with electric is better than none, can always use your tach for mph. All S-10 have the forward shifter location......Good Luck.....Lee

If you will Google T-5 Transmission, you will be able to find all kinds of information from how to rebuild, identify by tag only, convert rear shifter to front with S10 T-5 tailhousing and how to convert an electric unit to mechinical with a mechinical T-5 tailshaft housing and speedometer drive gear. I have a full note book of printed information that I have taken off of the different sites for T-5s on the net. The information is out there you just have to go look.

So is the Camero, I know far a fact that you can put the S 10 tailshaft housing on a rear shift Camero transmission, they must both be either NWC or WC because you need to use the top cover with the shift forks and the shift rod, or rail. You could just use the NWC S 10 shifter rail with the WC shifter forks without changing the top cover. I have read where people say that you can install a S 10 tailhousing on the mustang transmission, I have not tried it my self since I am also interested in installing a T-5 in my 55 Chevy pick up and the mounting bolt pattern is different that Fords.
