Hi guys! New member working on turning a 47 P15 tudor into a hemi (DeSoto) powered street rod. Getting ready to remove the "holy" gas tank. Checked the FSM and the parts book to see how to remove the straps, The front has clips held up by nuts holding the ends of the straps, but the straps block access to the retaining nuts. At the rear of the tank there appears to be some barrel-nut devices that screw up into the trunk floor. Any experienced tank removers out there who can tell me the best way to remove the tank??

For further info, I'm not sure which tank I'll put in. TANKS,INC has a replacement 15-gallon unit for $215 or stainless for $350. A local guy here has a 46 Business coupe and he used an S-10 Chevy Blazer tank which holds 20 gallons. A business coupe has no tire well like my sedan does and I don't think the Blazer tank will fit. Its about 33-in wide, 22-in long, and about 10.5-in deep. If I deep-6 the tire well, the blazer tank may fit. Blazer tanks from 83-85 w/o fuel injection should work. BE CAREFUL - they also made a 13-gallon tanks these years which is less than the stock Plymouth.

Thanks for any help. Barry

most of these straps are removed in four pieces..they are very prone to breaking..they twist rather harshly on removal...soak the barrel nuts good...heat would be excellent but could be dangerous..these tanks often have totten holes in the top surface...by experience, cut the strap just below the rivet ont he threaded part...remove tank..head the nut cherry red couple of times...while still warm, clamp with vice grip and remove the nut...simply reweld the strap..odds are you are going to have to reweld one of them anyway this prevents the distorted metal

Thanks to everyone for the input.

To DON: The engine and trans left a while ago to a local wrecking yard. It was bought by someone who needed the transmission. It wasn't running when I bought the car. Yeah, I'm putting in a 55 DeSoto hemi and A-500 O/D from a Dakota. Already installed a MII front end. I could get the gas tank out a number of ways, but didn't want to butcher the existing straps unless I knew I could mount suitable replacements. Since I may use a stock replacement tank, I wanted to remove the straps properly. Moved the brake pedal to the firewall and will run a Mopar aluminum M/C and a Ford 8-inch rear with 3.55 posi gears.

Barry;

Sounds like an interesting project. Where are you located? I would be interested in seeing pictures of your firewall mounted pedal assembly.

I am also running a Desoto engine but not a Hemi. I have installed an overdrive transmission and I am running 3.55/1 rear gears. makes for a nice Interstate cruiser.

Sorry you can't make it up to T-County, Don. Hope you kept your powder dry during that little afternoon shower we had today. Have a safe trip back to Murfreesboro. If I ever figure out how to maneuver around my digital camera and this web sute, I'll send some pics of the 47. You can e-mail me at moparist@bigriver.net. If you ever get back to Memphis let me know. I live up in the country but work in downtown Memphis (main post office/distribution center). Barry
