Heat riser..is it open or closed?

Need advice about my heat riser on my 49 Pilothouse stock motor. Mine just flaps loosely back and forth. Can it be fixed without removing the manifolds? The spring seems to be overarched or is too loose to work with changes in temp.

Since it doesn't work should it be turned all the way clockwise or counterclockwise for a cooler running engine? Anyone have photos or diagrams showing an "x-ray" view of the heat riser and which way is open and which way is closed? In other words which way to divert heat to the intake and which way to divert heat away from the intake?

Do a search, this has been mentioned and illustrated several times with pictures and illustrations. As far as possible clockwise it the summer position. Seen lots of the with and old pair of vise grips clamped on keeping it that positioin.

Maybe I'm obtuse but I did do a search for "heat riser" and found no pictures of an "X-ray" view. But knowing it should be all the way clockwise is good enough for now. thanks

get it fixed and your car will run much better.

It sounds like your spring is not adjusted right, however when you repair it yourself it will be right. Like the old saying goes - if you want something done right then do it yourself.

To leave it be as open only burns rich when cold (cold out) and fouls plugs.

Read the Forums Texhnical section on it and if that doesn't help buy Old Parts Toms spring with instructions and repair it. Somewhere around $30
