dezeldoc Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Ed, i like your vintage vaccum next to the vice grips! flintstones, meet the flintstones.... Quote
Young Ed Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 Haha thats dads old one. I didn't want to ruin the new one on this crusty car. I swept a lot of old floor out of the car with that thing. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 What did you use to drill the spot-welds out of the floor braces? Quote
dezeldoc Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 When i did the P-20 i had a 4" pile about 3' around and got the ol shop vac out and man that was fun! sounded like the 4th o july with all the chunks hitting the inside of the vac. went and started pricing the dynamat and a few others and it looks like it will cost about 200 bucks to do the inside. Young Ed Posted July 16, 2009 Author Report Posted July 16, 2009 I cut the floor out around the floor braces and then cut down the middle. After that I just pried up and most of them broke that way. A few I chiseled. One or 2 broke leaving a little piece of floor behind that I will have to grind off. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 16, 2009 Author Report Posted July 16, 2009 Last night I cut a piece of p15 roof to fill the floor in. Clamped it to the piece of inner rocker and trimmed a little. Then Dad pushed it down into place while I crawled under and traced out the floor braces and the edge of the tranny hump with a sharpie. Tonight I plan to trim some more based on those markings and start welding. Only part I haven't quite figured out is how to tightly hold the floor braces to the sheet metal while welding. Maybe floor jack? Oh I still gotta engineer the removable floor piece and the brace for the seat track too. Quote
dezeldoc Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Ed get some self drilling sheetmetal screws and just screw the floor down to the braces then pull the screws when done and weld up the holes. also drill 3/16" holes about every 3" to weld to the braces, replaces the spot welds and if ya do it right don't need much if any grinding to finish off. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 16, 2009 Author Report Posted July 16, 2009 I've been using 1/4 holes to weld. Might be slightly overkill but thats ok by me Quote
dezeldoc Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 A lot eaiser to weld, i have one of those air powered 1/8" hole punchers but i still take them out to 3/16. much better penetration on the bottom part. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I did what Dezeldoc suggests. I used tappet screws, or self tapping sheet metal screws. I screwed the floor down to the braces, welded it through quarter inch holes I punched in the sheet metal, backed the screws out, and then welded up the holes. Worked very well. You know your floor will be where it's supposed to be. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2009 Author Report Posted July 17, 2009 I got all the holes marked and drilled. Then decided I should replace the rotten fuel line while it was easier without the floor in the way. Cut that and drained a gallon or so of nasty gas out. Went to the back to unhook the line from the tank and noticed that the bottom of that was kinda wet looking. So out comes the gas tank. Its got holes in the bottom. Check out what we found inside it. Young Ed Posted July 17, 2009 Author Report Posted July 17, 2009 In case you couldnt see it in the last pic here's a better look at a few of the surprises. So yes I think I'm in the market for a new or better tank Quote
JerseyHarold Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Ya got me. What is that stuff?? I sent the tank from my '52 to Gas Tank Renu in the mid-nineties and it has been fine ever since. When I took it out of the car, there were huge rotted holes in it. All fixed by them. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 In the second pic they look like potatoes. Got to be rocks though, right? Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2009 Author Report Posted July 17, 2009 Yup 6 rocks covered in rusty gas tank goo. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2009 Author Report Posted July 17, 2009 If I can find his # I'll call the previous owner and see if he was aware of it. Might explain the locking gas cap that was on the car when I got it. He owned it from 61 until he gave it to me so most likely it happened during his ownership Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I found half a dozen pieces of gravel in my tank. Turned out to be the cause of my stalling problem. The P.O. had told me he had had the tank cleaned. I think someone used the "gravel as agitator" technique and didn't get all of it out of the tank. Jim Yergin Quote
hkestes41 Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 When I cleaned out my tank I found about a 2/3 of a cup of gravel, a few quarter size pieces of rubber, some broken glass, a popsicle stick, a couple of drinking straws and a fork (unfortunately it didn't match our silverware pattern). Quote
Young Ed Posted July 20, 2009 Author Report Posted July 20, 2009 My new gas tank Took another look at the old one. Has 3 holes about 1/8in by 1/4in each. Of course cleaning it might reveal a bunch more. Lots of scale on the bottom. Plan is to try and seal it up and make it work again Quote
dezeldoc Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 Ed, for what you could sell that tank for you could buy a stainless one! Quote
Young Ed Posted July 20, 2009 Author Report Posted July 20, 2009 That picture is just something I got off google. The 5gal one I have to use is just plain. Quote
dezeldoc Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 I figured that, but on the off chance you had one that clean $$$ Quote
Young Ed Posted July 22, 2009 Author Report Posted July 22, 2009 OK update. Picture will have to wait cause I forgot to get them off my camera Floor is attached with some screws and a few of the holes are welded. The couple I did last night didn't stick to the new rocker piece so I gotta figure out whats up with that. Both pieces were sanded with 80grit on an air sander so they should have been clean. Anyway Dad and I are going to try and give the old gas tank a molasses bath and then weld up the holes. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 23, 2009 Author Report Posted July 23, 2009 pictures. rusty gas tank and new floor Quote
