DigmyP18 Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 I used to have a 10 x 20 storage unit full of stuff and then I made a big move and relocated out of state. Once I got settled I went back for the storage unit and realized there was no way I could take it all. I was a Motorcycle/jetski mechanic for 10 years and had a lot of what I thought was great stuff. Just too much of it. I whittled it down by making up my own 2-Year Rule. If I hadn't used it, touched it or needed it in the last 2 years it didn't make it into the truck. Special exceptions were only made to stuff that I could sell quick if I needed cash. I gave some stuff to my friends and took what made the cut. The rest I let the Staroage guy auction off to pay my past due bill. (which was about 3 months worth). 3 weeks later I got a check for $50 which was the extra above what I owed the guy. Fast forward 7 years, I probably have a similiar level of stuff again. How does that happen? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 It seems to me that "stuff" multiplies by itself in a dark closed room. Quote
Flatie46 Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 One of my problems is, besides being a pack rat. They throw away too much good stuff where I work.I've scored some really good stuff for free because they've been cleaning house over the years.I've got a small hydraulic press that had not seen much use just because they didn't use it.I gave away a really heavy duty drill press that they we're going to toss because the motor burnt up,I brought it home with the intent of rounding up a motor. Two weeks later they tossed something that had a good motor that I robbed for it.They gave me a portable gas welder, a surface grinder not to mention the Jasper crate flathead for my car. It's hard not to be pack rat sometimes.Oh yea they also gave me a slant six that's still it the crate in my basement. BobT-47P15 Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 I know I could get by without SOME stuff, but part of it is "valuable" junk. I can often find a needed nut or bolt, but other times I have to go buy something. The two year rule is good, but I never know when one of my bright ideas will strike and I'll want one of those what-nots that's been on the shelf forever. We were thinking of buying a house right down the street from us.....and the thought of moving gets really scary due to the aforementioned goodies. But, now, that isn't going to happen. The good news was that house had a 38' by 18' building in the back yard....just perfect to store "stuff". But, maybe some other deal will arise later. Quote
