After 3 years took truck for shakedown ride. Made it 1/2 mile checked brakes and right front was hot so i returned. I will adjust tonight. My question is the transmission shifts smooth but jumps out of second with a pop. Any suggestions would help me alot. I have a 3 speed floor shift.

Also my gas pedel would not return to idle. I installed it with the arm verticle on the rod at the back of the engine. I took out the floor and turned the arm down and it works fine now.

I have the bed wood all cut and will install soon. I will post pictures soon.

Two ideas on the 2nd' gear popping out. First is linkage might need adjustment. Second is that 2nd gear is worn out and it's tranny rebuild/replace time.

My first car was a 1962 Studebaker Lark station wagon. It always popped out of 2nd gear after reaching a certain rpm, which just meant that it was time to shift into 3rd. I drove it that way as long as I owned it.

Does this happen during acceleration or deceleration?

I've had a few of those floor shifters that would pop out of 2nd on deceleration so I would just keep my hand on it to hold it in gear.

I've had my 4 speed do the same in 3rd. I was following some other cars at a speed that was just right for 3rd. But with little accels and decels it would pop out. So I just held it in with my hand and it stayed just fine. Apparently the weight of the lever was enough to pull it out of gear with no load on the gears.

Thanks for the replys. I didn't get very far but it happened getting up to speed. Is there an adjustment I can make since I still have the floor out. I do have a spare 3 speed if need be but this transmission was rebuilt. Is it possible a shim or spacing is out of tolerance.

"rebuilt" means different things to different people. May mean as little as cleaning the gunk off it, flushing the insides and installing new seals. Grab the shift lever when it is is 2nd and see if the lever will go past it's detent. May have bent shift fork or a lot of slack in the gear (shims/snap ring) or wear in the shifter itself. Pulling the lid will let you look at the gears. Check the engaging teeth, not the driving teeth of the gear, for rounded corners which is probably what you will find. Gear and shifting collar will need to be replaced. If not sure how rounded they are, compare to a gear that isn't jumping out.

Thanks for the information. I will pull the top off tonight. Is there a place to replace seal if needed? Hope I can tell what is needed to fix it. I do have a spar but don't know the condition. Hope to get it out for a long run.

Yes this is the black 48. The engine runs great after rebuilt carb, rebuilt distributor, spark plugs, plug wires, rebuilt starter, regulator, fuel pump etc. etc. It has been fun, just hope the transmission can be fixed. I have the bed wood cut out but need to sand etc. The interior came out ok. I hope to post some pictures when I get it outside. Getting close.

Your truck looks great! Thanks for the help.

Allan,

If you have a spare tranny, pull the bolts off the top cover and look at the two shift forks inside the lid. If one of them is worn, this will give you exactly what you are experiencing. If the shift fork is okay, the trans must come out to fix the synchro that is worn. By looking at your spare, you can get a good idea of how difficult the job is to do inside the truck. If only the fork is worn, just swap forks.

Since it's a floor shift like mine, there are no issues about linkage problems, like the newer trucks have, with three on the tree, etc.

Let us know what you find.

Good Luck

Thanks for the information!! The alignment of the clutch housing is a possible solution. I have a dial indicator but will need to find or borrow an Aligning Arbor. I have cleaned and painter my spare 3 speed, but it is a 1948 make and probably not have the internal changes mentioned in the Service Bulletin.

I also have a 4 speed transmission but it is longer than the 3 speed. I will check if I have a shorter driveshaft. I will keep you posted. Thanks Allan
